This automated feeder is intended to be used for your pets food only. It's recommended to use the Petmate Pearl Replendish Waterer With Microban if needed for water.

How does it actually work and know when to stop filling bowl

This is a gravity feeder, you can fill the food from the top and the food will drop down into the bowl as the bowl empties.

I bought a Petmate gravity feeder after one too many frustrating experiences programing a digital version. All I wanted was a practical feeder that didn't dump massive amounts of small kibble (in which case a giant bowl would do), suitable for an average size, mature cat. The feeder lid pops off easily but snaps on tightly, keeping food fresh, and making refills simple. About 1/4 cup of kibble is gradually dispensed as my cat eats. No kibble has jammed and become inaccessible. Feeder has been in use for about two weeks now. I ordered the brushed nickel color because it was on sale but, thankfully, it is more of a dark gray than a silvery shade.

I got this as a backup feeder for my outside cats, hoping it would be heavy enough that they couldn't knock it over to pull food down but it's actually pretty light

I have to dig food out of top to the lower bowl, it doesn’t drop. Tried shaking it, but the top flew off and fell on the floor spilling all the food. Not sure
