Can I place this strip at the top of my stairs to prevent my dog from going downstairs? What if the width of my stair case is narrower than the strip? Is it adjustable?

I would put it at the top of the stairs and a few inches away to prevent your dog from falling down the stairs. If you put it on the stair, and your dog is shocked, there’s a good chance they’ll jump and lose their balance. The strip isn’t adjustable.

My dog rubs against the sofa and actually moves the sofa. If I drape this over the side of the sofa will his rubbing activate the correction?

A pet rubbing against the ScatMat will not trigger the correction. In the mat, there are two wires woven into the material. When a pet steps on the mat and touch the two wires, they complete a circuit, and this is what causes the correction. The pet’s hairless pads are what allow them to feel the correction; the pet rubbing their fur-covered body against the mat won’t trigger the mat.

What's the difference between the original and generation 2? Is there a medium size generation 2?

The difference between the original and the generation 2 mats is that the transmitter now comes with an LCD display screen and soft rubber buttons. The display screen shows correction type, static level, battery status, and activation counter. There are still 3 strength settings of correction. The second generation also has closer wires in the mat that works more consistently. At this time, there is no medium size offered for the second generation mat.

Does this come with a power supply adapter?

This system uses a 9V alkaline battery and does not include a power supply adapter.

Stops the counter theft

Though this is supposed to be for the sofa, I have found that having it in front of my kitchen counters has stopped the theft of everything from napkins to sausages

Though this is supposed to be for the sofa, I have found that having it in front of my kitchen counters has stopped the theft of everything from napkins to sausages to uncooked pizza from the rear counter in my kitchen. Wish they had a 90 degree angle one for the edge of the counter, but this works.

Keeping curious cats off my Christmas tree

I was really excited about this because it’s my first Christmas with two very curious kittens, and I was hoping this would keep them out of my tree. When I opened it and put in the first battery, nothing happened. I figured maybe it was a bad battery, so I tried another one. The power light came on, but then it gave random beeps and random “zaps” with no pattern at all. I decided to try it anyway, thinking maybe I was overthinking it. Nope. It’s completely inconsistent. Both of my kittens walked right across it without any sound, any zap, nothing. It didn’t react at all. Super disappointed. I planned to exchange it, assuming I got a dud, but Chewy requires me to return it first and wait for them to receive it before they’ll send a replacement. By the time that happens, the whole point of this purchase will be gone. So I’ll just be returning it.

After two days with this 20 x 40 mat just inside my front door, our chihuahua mix and our 3-legged Aussie cattle dog stopped glueing themselves to the inside of the front door and barking like maniacs every time someone walked by outside with a dog on a leash. They still barked some, but since they couldn't get close enough to the door to see the offenders (our house is elevated), it was kinda half hearted. That's how it stands now, after a couple of weeks with the mat on.

Maybe I got a dud?

This mat worked great, for a day. But pretty quickly it started malfunctioning. As soon as it was ‘triggered’ by a pet it continued to activate, even after the pet

This mat worked great, for a day. But pretty quickly it started malfunctioning. As soon as it was ‘triggered’ by a pet it continued to activate, even after the pet was gone. I watched it note an activation over 40 times and nothing was even near the mat. It drained the battery in a matter of three days. For the day it worked correctly though, my kittens learned fast and had been staying off the counter! So I guess if it works right, it’s effective.

I bought 3 of these to keep my diabetic cat from using my new sofa as a litter box. Both of my cats learned very quickly not to get on the mats. I shocked myself first to see what my cats would experience, and on the lowest zap setting, it’s like a strong electric shock after shuffling in your stocking feet across the room. Just having the beeping sound turned on is enough to keep my cats off of it. Two paws up at this house.
