The primary use of pilocarpine in pets is to treat neurogenic KCS, which is caused by interrupted neurological signaling to the lacrimal glands. In dogs with coinciding dryness of the nasal mucous membranes, pilocarpine will also increase nasal secretions. Oral administration, but not topical ocular administration, increases tear production in dogs.
Call your vet if any of these occur: itching or hives, swelling, trouble breathing, fast, slow, or uneven heartbeat.
Always tell your vet about all medications and supplements your pet is taking before using Pilocarpine.
Pilocarpine is contraindicated in pets with a history of hypersensitivity to it or any component of the formulation. Avoid use in dogs with glaucoma secondary to uveitis or lens luxation, as the induction of miosis may lead to blockage of aqueous humor flow through the pupil, thus worsening glaucoma.
