How often is it recommended to change these filters?

The filter should be changed every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often.
Does this filter come with the plastic filter housing?I’m starting from scratch and this item alone is all that is needed to replace anything to do with the filter on my pet drinking fountain outside of the actual fountain itself?

This is a one-piece filter. The filters come with the housing for each one.
Do you have to run water through it first?

Horrible "improved" new design

The set on the right of this pic is the "improved" design. My cat's fountain barely stays clean for 3 days with this design. The design on the left is what it used to be years ago and keeps the fountain clean for up to two weeks! This happened to me before, the designed changed to be "improved," was horrible, then went back to the design on the left. I was so happy. Now, I made a new order for refills and was disappointed to this poor design is back. There may as well be no filter at all in the fountain with this design. I would give the design on the right ZERO stars if I could. The design on the left is MUCH better.

Here to Help

My silly cat and I both adore this fountain. Seriously, we have tried 5 other types before I landed on this. I've read other reviews from folks unhappy bcuz their fountains won't run after changing the filter. Please try again. I too, had problems. it took a few tries before I got it: #1 Make sure your pump is open all the way to begin with. You can decrease flow later if desired. #2 Make sure water is at recommended level, OVER the pump & filter. #2 Run it for a few seconds without the faucet in place. This blows out any dirt or sludge built up in the pump. #3 You MUST keep the little foam ring on the top of the filter! (I tried to throw mine away with the packaging). #4 The faucet must be put on straight! For me it works better after the water is filled and running. Once you've figured out what works or you, it is so very easy to clean and use!

Easy to change!

I bought the swan fountain a couple of years ago because my previous fountain was a total pain to clean. This fountain is a dream come true! Only takes about 10 minutes to clean and the filters are super easy to install and work great! I change the filter about every two weeks and dump all of the water, swish water around a bit in between changes. I can't say enough good things about the whole thing! Thanks for a great product.

This filter dod not work at all

Since you asked, I will say that after a few months of working well, the fountain went to a dribble, even though I cleaned the whole thing weekly and bought the new filters. They did nothing and now the pump does not work at all. Will you send me a new one?? Thank you~My cat loved it, and misses the fountain a lot.

very Disappointed

I bought these to replace the filter that came with the pioneer pet water fountain. I was excited because it actually fit and clicked into the pump which I was initially worried it wouldn’t fit. My excitement was short lived as after I filled the water back up and plugged it in, the fountain did not start running again. I waited a few minutes and nothing! I decided to just put the old filter back on and the fountain started running again immediately! So I’m guessing the filter is not completely compatible with the fountain? It’s just very disappointing and a waste of my $15!!
