How often is it recommended to change these filters?

The filter should be changed every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often.

Does this filter come with the plastic filter housing?I’m starting from scratch and this item alone is all that is needed to replace anything to do with the filter on my pet drinking fountain outside of the actual fountain itself?

This is a one-piece filter. The filters come with the housing for each one.

Do you have to run water through it first?

I really liked this fountain the first time I bought it. It’s in my living room so I could keep track of when the water got low. It was very quiet, but would make water noises when the water was low. I love that about it. So I bought it a second time when the first one bit the dust. This one I’m not so happy with. It constantly makes water noise whether it’s low on water or not. It becomes very irritating. I keep replacing the filter because sometimes that makes the water noises, but it’s not that because the filter is brand new. My cat on the other hand loves this thing! But me, not so much.
