How often is it recommended to change these filters?

The filter should be changed every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often.
Does this filter come with the plastic filter housing?I’m starting from scratch and this item alone is all that is needed to replace anything to do with the filter on my pet drinking fountain outside of the actual fountain itself?

This is a one-piece filter. The filters come with the housing for each one.
Do you have to run water through it first?

It is recommended to rinse the filter before use.

Excellent fountain

I got Pioneer Pet's swan neck fountain when my cats were kittens 3 years ago. They love it. They drink lots of water. There are a lot of parts to dismantle and clean each week but it's not overly cumbersome. You definitely need to thoroughly clean it weekly, with a quick-clean in the middle of the week. Very worth it.

I almost threw my phone away because it didn't come with any filters so I wasn't thinking that it needed another filter till I got on Julie and I seen them and I hurried up about and now my cats are drinking fountain works great

Cats love water

My cats enjoy this fountain with running water. It gets them to drink more which keeps us out of the vets office.
