Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Great for healthy weight loss!
By Monn on Feb 27, 2021
My vet informed me that my cat was approximately 3 lbs above his ideal weight and prescribed me this food to help. It took him some time to get used to it, but eventually he started preferring this food over his old one (I fed him Taste of the Wild prior). He was on the prescribed food for a year and reached his goal weight gradually. I tried to keep him on the food afterwards since it can also be used for weight maintenance, but he would never finish the suggested portion size for his weight. I eventually felt like I needed to feed him additional boiled chicken breast or add cat toppers to his food in order to meet his caloric needs in order to prevent any unnecessary weight loss. Best Order Mistake I have made.
By Sunflower on Feb 21, 2021
My husband ordered the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets OM Overweight Management Formula Dry Cat Food by mistake and it was the BEST MISTAKE MADE! My cat, Smokey Derby, Maine Coon/mixed don't know?, has been on another type of Purina for 2 yrs with limited weight loss. We rescued Smokey Derby when he was apx. 9 weeks old, from a blackberry bush that had a running stream, approximately 7 1/2 yrs. ago. I was thinking that he was getting bored with the other food. I opened this bag; gave it to him and he immediately began to eat it and hasn't had any problems so far. To be seen how much weight he will lose, but I am hopeful that the positive response received thus far is good.

My Chubs like dry diet, not so much wet
By Nedster on Dec 28, 2020
I got him at almost 23 lbs, so big cat no matter what but needs to slim down. He loves to eat! So trying to cut down where I can diet dry and not a lot and as he doesn’t like diet wet, give him that in morning when he’s starved and fancy feast late afternoon. He’s adjusting to that menu somewhat. He doesn’t get lot of exercise in winter but summer he roams around big house and property outside. Can’t change six yrs of eating habits overnight but step by step. I give him protein not gravy food to fill him up. Hopefully by summer a few lbs will be missing.

She likes it!
By Bosco on Feb 11, 2021
My cat loves the food but I have been over feeding her and didn't realize it. She doesn't go outside now so she doesn't get as much exercise and she's by herself now. She seems to like that part of it! I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

They have no choice but to eat it
By Caroline on Jan 23, 2021
I really can’t rate this yet because I don’t know if they like it or not. I mix it with their other regular dry food , and they are eating it, but if I gave only the OM to them, they might ignore it. I haven’t tried that yet. My vet recommended it and said her cats “love it”. But her cats aren’t my cats.

My Cats love this dry cat food
By OCCats on Jan 14, 2021
One of my cats has a metabolism issue but both cats eat together so I need a cat food that both will like. Both of my cats love this cat food and you would not even know that it was diet by the way they gobble it up. One cat has already lost weight but I can't tell yet with the larger one.

Great Return Policy
By LeroyMcCulley on Nov 29, 2020
I had auto ship for my cat's RX food. My vet changed his RX the same day the original auto ship arrived. Chewy refunded the original purchase and requested I donate the food to a shelter in my area. They re-entered the new RX and shipped. Great policy, Great service. Thank You.
