Does this food help prevent crystals in cat urine?

Answer by ChewyNov 13, 2022
This diet is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance, not prevention. The Urinary Care is restricted in minerals that contribute to urinary concerns such as phosphorus, magnesium and calcium. The Urinary Care is not intended to dissolve crystals and stones. It is geared towards cats that have never had a urinary concern in the past. The diet helps to maintain a healthy urine concentration by regulating the mineral balance. For the prevention of crystals, we would recommend the Urinary SO Dry Cat Food. Our Urinary SO product line contains a higher sodium level than some of our other maintenance formulas to assist in increasing urine volume and urination frequency. By increasing the level of sodium consumed in the diet, the goal is to make the pet thirsty so that they drink more water. In doing so, we are increasing urine volume (the water). Consequently, the increased volume of urine will stimulate the pet to urinate more frequently. This “flushes” the urinary bladder of the solutes and crystals that may have formed. Ensuring that we achieve proper bladder flushing with the diet is essential to helping to prevent stone formation due to crystals sitting in the bladder and forming together to build stones. It is recommended to consult with a vet prior to feeding this diet.

What is the Magnesium, Phosphorus, and Ash content of Royal Canin Feline Urinary Care Adult Dry Cat Food?

Chewy has lost the plot. Royal Canin is great otherwise!

The food isn't the issue, Chewy is. Chewy used to be a great company to order from. It was quick, customer service was awesome, vet prescriptions were filled quickly

The food isn't the issue, Chewy is. Chewy used to be a great company to order from. It was quick, customer service was awesome, vet prescriptions were filled quickly. Not anymore. We are supposed to be giving our cats the Royal Canin prescription diet, the vet approved the script four days ago and Chewy keeps saying they haven't. They told me the last script that was approved was in 2022 which is grossly incorrect as the last script was approved in 2024 and was good until 2025. That's according to Chew's own records yet they still can't find any script after 2022. The even better part is that WE NEVER EVEN HAD ANY PRESCRIPTIONS via Chewy in 2022! They're just making stuff up and it's actually causing problems with our cats health, how messed up is that? They require a prescription diet currently and I was hoping to save a little money by getting it via Chewy instead of paying more at the Vet. Like a lot of folks out there, life is super expensive and any savings helps, especially on pet food. Our Vet is awesome, Chewy - not so much. I'm incredibly disappointed with the way Chewy is now, it used to be so good! This will most likely be the last time I ever order anything from them. They're incompetent and wasting our time and our cats health by not doing their job. Don't offer the service if you can't complete it. It's beyond frustrating. I'm clearly not the only person having issues with this company and prescriptions. A quick search led me down quite the rabbit hole on how Chewy has gone downhill in the past few years and how they 'lose' prescription approvals thus sending clients into a drawn out process just to get their pets what they need. Vet offices have issues with them as well, obviously. If the Vet would drop the price a bit, that would be so helpful because prescription diets are incredibly expensive. Vets - take notice! Chewy, until you do better, you can expect to continually lose customers. Talking with the wallet is the only thing that these big corps understand.

My cat (male diagnosed with Anxiety) was peeing blood and having trouble going to the bathroom. (Was 1 years old when diagnosed) Concerned about blockages I took him to the emergency ER and was recommended Royal Canin SO, but seeing how a single bag of the SO was $70 and this was a life long dietary change, I opted to get the regular Urinary Royal Canin and it has helped greatly. (Saving money) While still costly for a 6lb bag for $43, I’d rather spend the extra dollar than another $1500 vet bill. It’s also turned out to be one of the only foods my cat prefers to eat.

I have finally found the perfect food for my Maine Coone cats that both of them will eat. They are brothers so have been together since birth. They absolutely have always insisted on eating each others food ie the same food and they actually prefer one bowl. You give them 2, they eat out of the same one and just take turns. The runt of the two has always been super picky about what he will eat. The shape and hardness of if this dry food plus apparently the taste doesn’t disagree with him either. Any quality dry food they’ll both eat I’m sold on. Especially when it’s healthy for their digestive tract.

Recommended by veterinarian after surgery. I think this should include the SO ingredient that is supposed to prevent stone formation. In order to get the SO ingredient, I have to purchase the prescription form of this food. Cats all like this food. I also feed the canned wet form of this food for cats, which they also like.

I was worried that they might throw up or get backed up, but my cats do very well on this food. I supplement with moist food and lockable treats to give plenty of moisture intake. The size f the kibble is good and not too hard, which works well for my toothless cat too.

Cats love it

Got tired of the prescription food racquet. Repeated vet visits just to get a good food?! No prescriptions are required for people diets! When you get a prescription

Got tired of the prescription food racquet. Repeated vet visits just to get a good food?! No prescriptions are required for people diets! When you get a prescription diet, the vets tell you "It's okay if the other cats eat it". If that is true, then why don't they just make quality cat food and a prescription SHOULD NOT be required. Cats seem to like this food even better and the cat that 'prescription' was for is doing fine. I feel like Royal Canin make good quality cat food so trust they formulated it okay for 'Urinary Care'.

Misleading

This item is misleading. My cat Salem was suffering from urinary blockages, but wouldn't touch the Hill's Science Urinary Diet food they offered at the veterinarian

This item is misleading. My cat Salem was suffering from urinary blockages, but wouldn't touch the Hill's Science Urinary Diet food they offered at the veterinarian. The vet suggested I try to look for the Purina or Royal Canin on Chewy.com and I thought this was the urinary diet food SO because I saw the letters SO in front of the IN (SOIN). I caught the mistake and ordered the correct one that says SO, but by then it was too late. I had been feeding Salem this food for a week and he developed his third and final urinary blockage because this food is not the one that dissolves the crystals or grit that develops in the bladder. I didn’t have the $7,000 to unblock him and had to euthanize him instead when he was only 6 years old and 11 months. I'm beyond devastated. Oh and if you look at the ingredients, this isn't healthy for your cat. Corn and meat by-products.

Urinary care food

It is the only cat food my Sam will eat! He loves his Churus & some of the Delectables but this is the only actual food, not treat, that he will consistently eat!

And I really appreciate that it’s urinary care. I have a neutered 3 1/2 yr old male cat and I do everything I can to ensure he stays healthy!
