Feeding guidelines are provided for each of our diets and indicate the amount to feed per day. We recommend dividing the recommended amount into 2 or 3 meals per day.

Storage Instructions: The best way to keep the product fresh is to store it in the original bag, inside a container, and use within 1 - 2 months. Since the product is naturally preserved, the longer the product is open, the more the product can oxidize. We do not recommend freezing the product because that can draw out the moisture in the kibble and upon thawing, it can mold.

Once open, we recommend using the canned product within 48 hours. Our formulators recommend adding a thin layer of water to the top of the can prior to refrigeration to keep the food moist. The food that is left out at room temperature should be discarded after 2 hours.

If your pet does not like refrigerated food, try heating it to room temperature by adding warm water.

Transition Instructions

We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.

About Royal Canin Veterinary Diets - Dermatological Line

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.

About Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

About Food Sensitivities

Signs of Food Sensitivity

Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants

What About Enviromental Irritants

  • fast and what I expected

    By on

It was exactly what I expected and it was fast delivery. The customer service for prescription food was also very helpful. I would highly recommend. I only hope they do not go out of stock with this brand of dog food. I have a hard time finding hypoallergenic dog food. They also have a great return policy. I have ordered a dog food before that my dog didn't like and they gave me a full refund. The auto shipping is also very convenient.

  • Royal canin hydrolysed protein food

    By on

I suddenly had to change my dogs food because of ulcer issues. Chewy.com delivered the food very quickly, before promised, after getting the prescription themselves from the vet and they were the least expensive I could find. The dog changed to the food without issues and finds it palatable ( but he is not fussy) . He has put weight back on within a week . I think Chewy.com gives incredible service and the food is worth the price.

  • Vet approved.

My dogs are 12 years old. All of a sudden they started having bowel problems and we couldn't get it to clear up. The vet decided we needed to try a different food even though they had been on a certain brand their whole life. He chose this food and sure enough it cleared up their problems. He said older dogs often develop these kind of things with age. They are picky eaters and they like this food so I am so glad he put them on it.

But my 9-yr-old Ridgeback, Keo, has gained his weight back beautifully - and this is a dog whom I've struggled to keep weight on. His digestion is great! No more cycling through diarrhea. He loves his Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein kibble. Thank you to Urban Animal in Seattle - great vets who put us on the right track! And, wow, Chewy's shipping makes a big difference too.

  • Agent J loves this dog food

    By on

After feeding my little guy a pricey “natural” dog food for 6 years, I was heartbroken to find the food had extremely high lead levels. After a very expensive treatment to restore his health, he was prescribed Royal Canin. I am happy to report that he loves this food and is continuing to improve. I also am reassured that there have been no recalls for this product.

  • This food saved our rescue dog!!

    By on

Four years ago, we rescued an 8 year old Beagle/Chow mix. Shortly after we got him, he began having HORRIBLE gastrointestinal problems and went through vomiting and pain literally every other day. This went on for a year as the vet administered many tests and foods with no success. The only relief he had was when we put him on the bland chicken/rice diet, but he eventually began to react to that and it wasn't complete nutrition. We were at the point that we were considering putting him down to end his suffering which broke our hearts, and the vet suggested the Royal Canin HP food. This food literally saved his life! No more vomiting, no more "squeaky", bloated stomach, no more loose stools, no more laying on his side for 24 hours while in discomfort! The symptoms were completely gone and have been to this day. I cannot tell you how thankful I am that some scientists somewhere tackled this problem, because it saved my sweet dog's life. That was three years ago and he is a happy, gentle, and HEALTHY little friend who can't wait to eat his breakfast and dinner. We now spend our days going for walks instead of trying to nurse him through his sick, painful stomach episodes. THANK YOU!! … more

  • Gobbled up

    By on

No issue transitioning to this new food, our guys gobbled it up and seem to love it. Both this product and the wet food are much more expensive than our regular food so I’m hoping we are able to figure out the allergy, but if we need to stick with partially hydrolyzed it’s great peace of mind to know this product is available and my dogs love it

  • It's working!

    By on

The vet put my puppy on this food to begin allergy testing. He is 14 months old and has had nearly constant ear infection and skin issues. Within just a couple weeks his ears have cleared up and the scratching is at a minimum. The down side is that he doesn't seem to like the food as well as he did the Nature's Recipe he was getting before.

  • We are happy with this dog food!

    By on

Our golden was very sick not keeping any food down, so our vet ran lots of tests learning later that he had a protein allergy. The Dr. recommended this food and ever since, our dog has been doing excellent and he loves the food, too. We also mix in the wet food of the same product and it has worked great for him.
