Questions & Answers

Are there any plans to release a larger “taller” version of this? Also a plug in version so batteries aren’t needed. Of our 3 cats the smallest requires the strictest diet and he barely can eat out of it because of how constricting it is so there’s no way it could possibly work for the bigger cats.

Answer by AnneJun 23, 2025
For what it's worth, I put mine on a small box so that it could be raised up and that has worked well for my cat.

Can 2 cats with different chips eat out of the same feeder? My 3rd cat is the one that eats the others food whenever he can.

Answer by VictoriaAug 07, 2025
Yes

Can I program up to 8 cats to one feeder? I want all the cats but one to be able to use one feeder. Then get a second that only the one eating medicated food can use.

Answer by CarolineAug 16, 2025
Yes, you can program up to 32 cats (and/or dogs) to one feeder. Just push the program button (cat head) to enter program mode, get one of your cats to check out the feeder (treats work great for this), and it'll program him/her. Repeat for each cat that you want to use that feeder.

What kind of micro chip is needed? Some people are saying not all chips work with this feeder.

Answer by ShellyFDec 30, 2025
The microchip referred to the description is the medical grade microchip commonly inserted into pet felines and canines by veterinarians. This type of microchip is preloaded with information about that particular animal. The feeder contains a microchip reader. The pet owner sets the Surefeed to read 1 or more microchipped pets. After that, the Surefeed will only open for that pet(s).

These feeders are a lifesaver for our cats! We have three cats all with different food needs. Two free feed, one cannot, and they all have different food. It allows us to monitor the quantity they are eating while allowing them to have separate diets. Setting up the feeders and getting our cats acclimated was shockingly easy. Two of our cats are pretty timid but they understood and used the feeder within a day of us setting them out. After two years of owning these, I've only ever had to change the batteries twice which is NOT bad! I will say, our cat that doesn't free-feed finally learned how to break into these feeders after 2 solid years of persistence. However, this was easily mitigated with a 3D printed part sold off Etsy.

Absolutely cannot recommend this enough for kitties! I tell all my friends who have multiple cats about it. This allows my cats to have different diets and to keep it restricted to themselves. I’ve had one determined cat try to break into the other bowls and other than some scratches, he gave up and it never budged. I have had my first bowl for about 6 years now and it’s still going strong. For batteries, I get mine at the dollar store to save $$. I have added 3D printed cat shaped holes to not allow side by side eating and modge podged stickers on the top of each bowl with their names. The rear cover is also a life saver! The most finicky part about this is the cat’s microchip. If the chip migrates (it’s supposed to be in between the shoulder blades but can move to a leg or further back as they get bigger) then your pet might have to stick their head all the way in to get it to open. This is where the RFID tag would be helpful. I have a timid cat who took the full two weeks in training mode to trust this machine. Then other cats who took to it on day one! Has worked for them all. To clean, I wipe down with a damp paper towel. - even with a sneezy and messy eating cat it’s relatively easy to wipe down. The bowl, flap, rear cover, and mat can be removed and washed with soap and sponge like normal.

One of our cats like to graze, and one inhales any food in his path immediately. We bought this to level the playing field. We went back and forth on it for months, but are so glad we bought it and wished we would’ve done so sooner. It’s super easy to set up. Our cat took a couple days to get used to it, but it works great and now she loves it. We were worried the sound would scare her away, but it makes minimal sound when opening and while closing sound is a little louder, it hasn’t been enough to deter her after practice. Keeps our other cat out of her food, much to his dismay. Definitely worth trying!

Perfect for my little food thief!

I have a new kitten that LOVES food and my slightly older cat that is a true grazer. The kitten was constantly eating my grazers food before he could get to it. We started feeding them in separate rooms but my grazer just wasn’t hungry at set times. The microchip thing works great. It didn’t take long for him to get used to it and now I KNOW how much he’s eating. I’m thinking about getting the kitten one too only because I think my grazer goes for her food sometimes to show dominance. Love this. The only thing I would prefer is a stainless steel bowl which I think is sold separately but don’t see them on Chewy.

Perfect for small to average cats, very frustrating for large cats

I got one of these a few years ago for our oldest cat, an 8.5lb old lady whose prescription food was getting stolen by our other cats. It has worked beautifully

I got one of these a few years ago for our oldest cat, an 8.5lb old lady whose prescription food was getting stolen by our other cats. It has worked beautifully for her with zero issues. Recently one of our other cats began needing daily medication too and so to avoid his food being stolen we got an identical feeder for him. The problem is that he is a large cat - 17.2lbs - and he is simply too tall for the sensors of this device. His microchip is correctly implanted between his shoulders but because he is a big cat his shoulders are way further back than the sensors seem to expect. I also wonder if there's a difference in sensor range with this one compared to the identical one I bought years ago from the same company, because our old one opens for old lady cat when she even just approaches it from the front. This one our poor big guy is having to shove his entire head almost directly on top of the food bowl to get it to detect his chip and open for him which he doesn't really like (who would?) since it opens a centimeter from his nose. This also means that if he lifts his head or backs up even a little bit while eating it closes again and he has to push his way back in again. He can't wear the included collar tag that is meant to help when a cat isn't microchipped because his skin is very sensitive and he gets rashes from every collar we've tried on him so that's unfortunately not a solution. The feeder does its job, nobody steals anyone's food, and old lady cat is quite pleased, but big boy is grumpy about it and sometimes it frustrates him enough that he walks away from his food for a while before trying again. I wish we had a different option available for keeping them out of one another's food but since we're not able to supervise all feedings for the entire duration it would take him to eat, this is our best option. If your cat is normal sized, buy this, but reconsider if you have a very large cat. Photos included showing his awkward hunched position while eating to keep his shoulders in range, and how the device is closed when he leans back - smaller cat moving into this position while eating doesn't trigger the machine to close.

I got this for my cat that eats only wet food as she had dental issues and doesn’t have any teeth anymore :(. I didn’t realize it was battery powered and that is inconvenient. Additionally, the side pieces that would block another cat from coming in to steal food, are not effective as they don’t go all the way back, it’s only a part of the side. The other cat very much wants this cats wet food and he is able to get through the side. I’ve ended up just putting the wet food cat in a room and shutting the door and just hope this feeder helps throughout the day if she goes back. Which kind of defeats the point of getting this in the first place. Otherwise it works as described and was easy to set up. The cost is not worth the quality of function though. I wish there were more options for wet food.

One of our cats slightly bullies the other during feeding time, meaning that one will not eat until the other is finished. They were both put on a diet by the vet, which made the process so much more difficult. We put an end to that using these bowls. The instructions indicated allowing a week or so for your pets to acclimate to the new bowl before setting it to fully automate with their microchips. I did not follow that instruction because my cats were used to full free-feeding. About four days before the feeders arrived, I stopped free-feeding and switched to a monitored twice-daily schedule, keeping one on the left and one on the right. This prepared them to eat at the time of feeding and in the correct place. The setup took about 15 minutes. I quickly ran through the acclimation process, then let them have at it. All-in-all, they were each eating at their correct feeder within a day.

Battery operated (4 C batteries) which I'm told should last multiple months. Registers the microchip that I put in her at the vet's when she was a kitten, so no hassle with collars or tags. Got it because I'd adopted a new boy cat who eats everything in sight, while my little girl is a grazer. So I think the feeder also contributed to their relationship improving quickly. Highly recommend, worth the money.

I purchased back in late 2024 and it previously worked perfectly for our cats. I even bought a second one off a different website. After about 1 year, the flap stopped opening for our cat. It’s still programmed, batteries are fine, but the flap didn’t open. We only recently discovered the mechanical arm used to open and close the flap physically broke. A component (I think called a connecting rod) snapped in two. It is made out of plastic. So, motor still spins but the flap doesn’t open because the arm which pushes open the flap is no longer connected to the motor. It happened to BOTH of our units at about after about 12 months of use. My one cat grazes all day so it opens multiple times a day. This makes me question the reliability of this unit as they broke in the exact same way and after similar time and usage.

At first my cats were not happy with their new feeders but with a little time and patience they have learned the ways of the feeder. Putting treats on it when it's closed to get them to approach the feeder so it reads their chip helps a lot. Also a breakaway collar and the chip it comes with was a lot of help with my one cat who's chip is further back. But make sure the collar is a breakaway, safe collar so kitty doesn't get caught on something and gets choked
