Are these sunflower chips finely ground or medium? Thanks!
Answer by ChewyApr 24, 2020
Please see the attached image for an example of this foods texture.

What is the 6-lb. hearts & chips equal to in size compared to a 20# bag of sunflower seeds? Does anyone know the net weight of regular after the birds break the hulls??
Answer by ChewyJul 31, 2019
After hulling a 20-lb bag of sunflower seeds, there are only typically 1-2 pounds of edible seeds. The hearts and chips would be a more economical value for regular feedings.

Are there millet seeds in this bag?
Answer by ChewyMar 03, 2020
This bird food only contains Sunflower Chips. To locate a complete list of ingredients, click on the 'Nutritional Info' tab, just under the product photos.

Does this seed sprout?
Answer by ChewyAug 27, 2021
This sunflower seed will not sprout, as it does not have the hull.

Velcro Closure? Yes, please!

The Velcro closure is great, way better than zip closures or no closure at all. The birds love the seeds and aren’t tossing out good seed to find something they like, or while trying to toss out empty shells. In short they aren’t making a mess, and wasting good seed. The birds love it. I love the no mess and Velcro closure.

If seeds too large, try auto-grinding hard hearts to chips for feeders

Wagner seeds have changed again. Recent seed batches are now dryer and harder. I first took notice when mourning doves and finches were just moving seeds around in the feeding tray. Seeds were being tossed to the ground. Thinking smaller bits might help, I poured seeds into a baggy and used a hammer to break them into chips. It worked. The smaller pieces made it easier to feed. So I then bought a mini-food processor. Now it only takes seconds to make bite size pieces out Wagner's larger and harder sunflower hearts and chips. Birds are having a much easier time eating, particularly the finches.

Whole Seeds vs Chips/Hearts

Purchased multiple bags in the previous years and received chips/hearts as described and in product photos but last two orders this year have all been whole sunflower seeds. (We have a tube Squirrel Buster feeder for small city birds so they make a mess due to the larger size and we end up feeding the large city rats instead! We had some luck doing a course grind to size them down but ended up with a lot of dust/not worth the effort in a large quantity!)

Best Sunflower Hearts I’ve gotten yet

I spend probably $800 or so a year on sunflower hearts and chips and I can definitely say these are a great no dust choice. Clearly there is a large quality control process going on at Wagners because any other options I’ve purchased have been visibly lower quality. The packaging is also very user friendly and uses a Velcro zipper which works amazing. Overall 10/10 for Sunflower Hearts.

Wagner's Sunflower Hearts and Chips

It seemed over time more sunflower chips rather than hearts were in the bag. We had to stop ordering because our birds were not eating the food. We switched to another brand and the birds are enjoying the brand with sunflower hearts only.

Wagner's sunflower hearts not what it was

This product went from great to terrible within a couple of weeks! I've ordered for years and now instead of sunflower seeds, it's like sunflower cornmeal. Birds won't it it and even the squirrels won't eat it! It's like the Kaytee's terrible product. And I bought 6 bags of it because it was a consistently good product. Don't buy this!!! Am cancelling my autoship. Not sure what to do with all the bags of this junk.

Good but expensive

Love the product but no better than the cheaper Kaytee sunflower chips. Also order 4 bags. Nd it is always packed in one heavy box. We are older and it makes it difficult to bring in to the house

Birds are loving it

Even the species who don't eat seeds - guess they did not read the Field Guide to Birds.

March 2023 bags might contain mild!

I have purchased this brand several times in the past year, but the most recent batch came with chunks of moldy seeds inside. It was brand new and unopened! Make sure to check before feeding to birds. In my 20 years of purchasing various bird seeds, I have never opened a package to see mold.

INACCURATE - Does not look like the image

IMAGE is not accurate. These are NOT hearts and chips. Received 3 bags - ALL HEARTS. If you are looking for chips.. do not purchase.
