My cat was sneezing alot and had recently read that they can be allergic to chicken. I also had a cat who was allergic to corn years ago. There isn't much out there that doesn't have something chicken in a beef flavor or salmon flavored car food. American Journey is the only one that I could find that still has oat in the ingredients. It took my cats a fee days to get use to it. My cat has stopped sneezing and has crazy energy again. I just wished it wasn't so pricey.
One of my cats has a chicken allergy that can make her so itchy that she’ll lick herself raw, so I’m really particular about the food that she gets. She was on a prescription diet for a while before we figured out what she was allergic to but it was too expensive to keep her on once we realized the allergen was chicken. So many cat foods that are marketed as fish flavored have chicken meal in them, so it was hard to find an alternative to the prescription food. This fits the bill perfectly. It’s less than half the cost of the prescription food and there really isn’t any chicken in it - as attested to by my happy cat. She can be a picky eater too but she loves this stuff. Could not recommend it more.
My three indoor only kitties absolutely go crazy for this food. I am so happy we made the switch and there are no more upset tummies. I did have to take away a star though for the unfortunate update to the packaging. The bag used to have a ziploc type closure to keep the food fresh, but now it doesn't, so I either have to go buy a food storage container, or find a strong bag clip to keep it closed and curious kitties out.
I’ve used this food for years and have never had a complaint about it, until now… along with the bags “new look” they removed the bags ability to reseal. Being resealable was such a convenient feature and I’m pretty upset they got rid of it.
Within several days of starting this food, my cat developed horrible acne on his chin, like cystic acne. All his chin fur disappeared, replaced by large painful boils. I didn't realize it was from the food, since it is supposedly "high quality," and thought he had simply reached "cat puberty" since he is about age 1 year. I cleaned his chin daily with chlorhexidine and witch hazel, as instructed by vets online, but this never helped. Finally we finished the bag and switched to the other flavor I bought, and his acne resolved on its own within 1 week and all of his chin fur is back. I read on a Reddit forum that other peoples cats' have developed hypersensitivities/acne to salmon-flavored cat food, so just something to be aware of if your cat develops acne while eating this food.
I have been feeding my 3 litter-mate cats this food as a blend with other American Journey varieties since Chewy introduced it in 2017 (at an obviously reduced anti-inflationary, introductory price) due to the ingredients that were close to the higher priced cat foods. The cats were around 4 years old at the time. We came up with a blend of the salmon and chicken/turkey American Journey flavors and Taste of the Wild. They loved it then, and they still do. They are now 10. They are healthy house cats, no hairballs, great coats, great teeth, firm poops, no internal issues, no vet visits and they are still running about the place playing. Always stick with a balanced grain-free food and spend a little more or an older cat may develop some nasty issues. I know from previous felines. Since it is dry always place cool water sources for their digestion and kidneys. Hey, I'm not going to give this blend a personal taste test but the cats do it all the time and they like it. What else matters?
Our kitties jumped right in and seem to enjoy this kibble. They are picky eaters and we've tried a variety of foods to keep them interested. We're happy to have found this one!
My cats are obsessed with this food from day 1. The cranberries in it appear to have my cat who gets frequent UTIs to relax a bit (I have been mixing his uti meds in it but its still better than his previous food since no out of box accidents). He also has eosinophilic granuloma that displays in ulcers which have drastically shrunk since switching to this food over other chicken free foods. I will say they like the food a bit too much as they will inhale it until they puke so I can no longer free feed them. Overall I am so happy with this food I could cry.
Well packaged, good products and arrived on time. My cat is happy so I'm happy.
My 2 year old kitty has to change her food to Hills BIOME, I can't afford that price point so with a lot of research I decided to try American Journey and she flat refuses to eat it! When I first got it she ate it that night and promptly puked it up. (Puking is why the vet changed her food.) Now I am stuck with the bag of expensive food she won't eat. I can't send it back because I already dumped it into her storage bin. I am mad and sad, back to research!
