These Carob-Mint Cookies for Dogs Are Inspired By One of Your Favorite Treats
Is there anything better than tearing open a box of cookies you’ve been waiting all year to enjoy? Well, there is one thing: sharing that delicious moment with your fur baby! Of course, you SHOULDN’T EVER give your dog even a bite of your favorite chocolate, minty cookies (chocolate is poisonous to pets, and all that sugar wouldn’t do them any favors, either). But you can give them these DIY dog treats that are inspired by those cookies you wait all year for.
Created by cookbook authors and Trunk Pop Dinners co-founders Marge Perry and David Bonom, these carob-mint cookies for dogs feature canine-safe ingredients (they’re chocolate-free), allowing you to indulge your pooch. Plus, the mint can help freshen your dog’s breath for some extra-pleasant post-cookie kisses. Carob-Mint Cookies DIY Dog Treat

Ingredients
- 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons carob powder
- 1/2 teaspoon dried mint
- 1/2 of a large egg
- 1/4 cup unsalted chicken broth
- 1/4 cup carob chips
- 1 + 1/2 teaspoons canola oil

- 1.5-inch round biscuit or cookie cutter

Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, carob powder and dried mint in a medium bowl.
2. Half an egg by cracking and whisking 1 egg in a small bowl and then measuring out two tablespoons. (Discard the remainder.) Mix the two tablespoons of egg and chicken broth.
3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until a rough dough forms. Knead the dough in the bowl 5-6 times until it’s fully combined and smooth.
4. Place the dough on a lightly floured work surface and roll to a 1/4-inch thickness.
5. Use your biscuit or cookie cutter to cut out the treats and transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.
Press the dough scraps together and reroll to a 1/4-inch thickness and cut out more cookies until you have about 12-15 cookies.
6. Bake the treats in the center of the oven until fairly firm, about 30-35 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool completely.
The cookies will harden as they cool.
7. Place the carob chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave the chips on medium power in 30-second increments, stirring in between, until melted. Stir the oil into the melted chips until incorporated and the carob is smooth and shiny.
8. Spread the top of each cookie with a thin layer of the melted carob. Let stand 30 minutes to allow melted carob to set before serving.
How to store:
To ensure proper food safety, refrigerate leftovers within 1 hour of preparation and consume within 3-4 days or transfer to a freeze-safe container and store for up to 1 month.
