Methimazole is an oral medication prescribed by vets to help treat cats who suffer from an overactive thyroid gland. This medication is formulated to help control your cat's hyperthyroidism and helps relieve symptoms, such as vomiting and weight loss. Plus, it comes in an oral tablet form, so it can be disguised in your cat’s favorite food. Customers may receive this drug under the names Tapazole, Felimazole.

Methimazole Tablets are indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects usually occur during the first three months of treatment. They may include loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy. These typically occur within the first two weeks of treatment and may eventually stop even with continuation of treatment. Less common side effects are yellowing of the gums, skin, or eyes (jaundice) which may signify liver problems. Itching of the face, scratching, or increased bleeding tendencies may occur.

Drug & Food Interactions

Do not use in cats with hypersensitivity to methimazole, carbimazole or the excipient, polyethylene glycol. Do not use in cats with primary liver disease, renal failure, autoimmune diseases, hematological disorders or coagulopathies.

Use of Methimazole Tablets in cats with renal dysfunction should be carefully evaluated. Reversal of hyperthyroidism may be associated with decreased filtration rate and a decline in renal function, revealing underlying renal disease.

NOTE: For Generic Medications, picture displayed may not depict actual product. Generic medications may vary from one order to the next by size, color and shape depending on manufacturer. Customers may receive the same drug under the names Tapazole, Felimazole.

What is Methimazole?

A tablet that is given primarily to cats in order to control hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland). It is given orally (by mouth) as directed by your veterinarian. This medication is not a cure for the disease. It will, however, help to control the condition which should help minimize your cats symptoms.

What results can I expect?

Methimazole should help to decrease your hyperthyroid cats level of thyroid hormone. This should help to reduce your cats hyperthyroid symptoms including vomiting and weight loss. This should help your cat to feel better. It can take 1-4 weeks to see a decrease in the level of thyroid hormone produced by the body. This medication does not cure hyperthyroidism but it should help to control the condition and minimize symptoms. This medication usually needs to be given for your cat's lifetime in order to optimally control the disease.

  • New to chewy pharmacy

I recently ordered this medicine via Chewy.com pharmacy after I was advised I needed this medicine for my cat. The process was relatively easy and was shipped quickly before I ran out of the original vet prescription. My cat is 17 years old and requires this medicine for the rest of her life. I am happy it is very inexpensive and conveniently arrives with my monthly auto-ship orders. I would recommend to anyone requiring a prescription for their pet.

  • Getting better

    By on

My Maine Coon was losing weight quickly, fur was ratty, and he was always hungry and eating but not gaining. After a complete blood panel, he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. He takes 2x 2.5mg of methimazole now and thyroid levels are back in normal range. In about 6 weeks, his fur looks better, he's gained about 1.5 lbs. And is no longer agitated all the time. The first step is blood testing. Then faithfully giving my Turbo one tiny pink pill every 12 hours.

  • Easy Refill

    By on

This is my first time using this service. What an enormous difference from having to see my veterinarian, waiting to see if he has the the drug in stock. Then, returning the next day to pay and pickup my kitties prescription. This service has changed all of the above. No driving, no waiting. BUT, what I have paid at my vets for this prescription is NOW one third of the cost!! Yes!!! Same drug, same strength, same number of pills. Enormous difference. You will receive fast and accurate service. Highly recommend this Chewy service.

My 13 year old female tortie has hyperthyroid. I am so happy that I was able to refill her prescription for a much lower price than my veterinarian charges! Thank you, Chewy!

  • Methimazole

I found this item on your website when I entered the proprietary drug name. It was considerably less expensive and Chewy did all the work to get the Rx from the veterinarian.

I still like to get meds from my vet, but when i can't this was super easy. My vet always has the best brands for my cats but this is a close second if i can't get to their office.

Louie, a 12 year old cat was constantly puking up all types of stuff. He needed pills for his thyroid. Ordering the pills from CHEWEY was very cost effective and appreciated. CHEWEY contacted the vet and we had his meds in just a few days.

  • Best price available

This review is for medication, which works just as well as any other. The reason for my review is to praise the great cost savings by purchasing through Chewy! My kitty has to remain on this for the rest of her life, so thank you Chewy, for offering this expensive medication at an amazing low cost.

  • Decent Price!

I like that this product is uncoated, makes it easier to crush and disguise in Buddy's food twice a day. His hyperthyroidism symptoms have decreased dramatically with no or minimal side effects. Glad we were able to find this pharmacy as our Vet only had the coated pills at 3 times the cost of this site!
