For best performance, the fountain pump needs to be cleaned every two weeks. When cleaning the pump, we recommend cleaning the fountain and changing the filter as well. Multi-pet households may need to be cleaned more frequently.
Steps | Pump Cleaning Instructions |
---|---|
1. | Use your nail or a tool with a small edge to remove the face plate on the end opposite the cord. Please note: the Outdoor Dog Fountain pump face plate slides out. |
2. | Pull up on the small lip to remove the teardrop-shaped stator. |
3. | Remove the impeller by pulling up from underneath it with your finger. |
4. | Clean all parts of the pump using soap and warm water with a small brush, such as a toothbrush. Completely rinse the pump, then reassemble. |
The fountain stopped working.
There are several possible causes for a fountain to stop working. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the motor to start pumping water once it’s refilled or plugged in. If water doesn’t flow after 5 minutes, try these troubleshooting tips:
Lack of regular cleaning may result in the pump becoming clogged with pet hair and food debris. The pump must be cleaned every 2 weeks to ensure proper function. Please refer to the owner's manual for detailed instructions on how to properly clean your motor. To clean the motor:
Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
The motor is not working.
The water’s not flowing as much as it used to.
There’s black dirt in the bowl. This black stuff is loose activated carbon from the filter and is completely harmless for your pet to drink. The carbon filter is made of organic coconut shells. Rinse the filter in cold water before placing it in the fountain to prevent this. Some filters may shed more carbon than others due to differing consistency of carbonl in each batch of filters, so don’t be surprised if some filters leave behind more carbon dust than others.
Capacity | Overall Length | Overall Width | Overall Height |
---|---|---|---|

Never rinse the filter in soap. Washing your filter will allow the soap to seep into the pores and this cannot be removed, making the filter unusable and unsafe for your pet.
Do I need to use a filter with the fountain? The filter is not required for normal operation of the fountain, but it does significantly improve the overall cleanliness and taste of the water for your pets. The filter removes bad tastes and odors to improve the taste of the water and catches hair and small particles to keep the water cleaner.
Filters are still helpful even if you use filtered water in the fountain. The activated carbon continuously cleans water as it flows through the filter. The pre-filter protects the pump from dirt, fur, drool, and debris.
Pets, especially cats, can be a little timid with the fountains at first. This is a new object added to their environment, so give your pet enough time to get used to the fountain at their own pace. This time frame will usually only take a few days, and it is very rare that a pet will refuse to use the product entirely. If your pet prefers to drink running water from the faucet or shower, she will probably get used to the fountain very quickly. Here are a few tips to help transition your pet:
How do the filters work? The activated carbon filter removes bad tastes and odors from the water and catches large particles and debris from re-circulating back into the water. The filters do not purify the water. Change them every 2-4 weeks, depending on how many pets use the fountain, to keep the fountain water fresh and clean.
How often should I change the filter? The activated carbon filter should be changed every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often. Pre-filters can usually be changed less frequently.
What are the filters made of? These filters are similar to filters used in fish tanks. They are safe to use with your pet’s drinking water. The organic activated carbon used in the filters is made of coconut shells.
What’s the difference between the regular carbon filters and the premium filters? Once the filter has been used, the activated carbon tends to settle in the bottom of the pouch. The premium filters have 6 smaller pouches, rather than the 2 in the original filters, so the carbon is spread out more evenly for better filtration quality.
Why do I need to change the filters? Over time, debris gets stuck in the outer fabric of the filter, making it more difficult for the water to pass through it. The inner part of the filter contains granulated carbon with hundreds or thousands of microscopic holes, which bind to impurities in the water that cause bad tastes and smells. This binding prevents impurities them from returning to the water. Eventually, the holes become clogged and can no longer remove impurities.
Which side of the filter should face the front? Put the filter in the filter housing with the black side facing the front.
Is the plastic in your fountains BPA-free? Yes. All of our plastic fountains and plastic parts are BPA-free, including cords, pumps, and filter housing.

I would have given this 4.5 stars if possible. We've had this fountain for 2 years and 4 months and are very happy with it. So much so that we're buying a second one. We haven't had any parts break and it assembles and disassembles easily. Cleaning it is a bit of a pain but not hard. I use the Drinkwell brushes and a pair of small cleaning brushes, but a toothbrush would do just as well. Pros: Cat likes it. He prefers the running water over stagnant. He has chronic kidney disease so he drinks A LOT and this helps him stay hydrated. The trickling water fountain sound can be relaxing if you like that sort of thing. Sturdy and seems well made. Pump is still going strong after 2+ years. Filters are easy to replace. Cons: After about two years we had some rust start on the cone shaped part where the water hits. However, this coincided with a move to a house on well water. It does get white water spots sometimes but soaking in a sink full of water with a bit of dish soap and a slug of vinegar can help. The flow of the fountain is not always consistent (sometimes it's more of a trickle) but I think the vinegar soak helps with this. Sometimes it does splash water onto the floor. I try to keep it on the lowest setting. Also, we are in the habit of checking the water level regularly but the fountain does hum when the water gets below the minimum line. We are getting a second one due to rust on the cone-shaped piece and decided to get the same model because then we will have spare parts to swap out if needed.
Love this Stainless water fountain. So do my cats, they seem to drink longer. Had the plastic one but seemed to need too much frequent cleaning. This one stays cleaner longer and easier to clean. Only complaint is the plastic clips. One broke when I tried to get it back together after cleaning. Maybe they can make a change on that design. Would buy again.
I received this fountain through someone else who no longer had a need for it. It looked "like new" and came with everything as if it was - even had some filters to go with it. I've been using this fountain going on 4 years now. My pets - one dog and two cats - love it! It has increased the amount of water they drink which is a huge plus since one of my cats has a history of crystals in his bladder so he is on a 3/4 wet/ 1/4 dry diet already - having him drink more water helps even more. I stopped using the filters for this fountain since they were encased in plastic and did not impact the performance of moving water up and out. The plastic isn't recyclable and the filters cost extra money that I found to not be necessary. The fountain is cleaned every 2-4 weeks with every single piece taken apart - including the pump. There was a time when I thought my pump died early but then I came across a post online in which someone recommended to take the pump apart and clean it to bring it back to life. So for several years, the routine was to pop off the grill section of the pump (where the water flows in), remove the piece that covers the spinning blades, and remove the piece that is on the other side of the pump where the power cable connects - then clean everything. This had kept the pump running up until yesterday. I thought this time the pump had really died as the usual cleaning routine did not revive it. However, while searching for the replacement pump here on Chewy, I saw an image that showed the pieces of the pump removed with text "easy to clean." This image showed that the magnetic cylinder with the three white blades could be removed and cleaned! I had no idea! Figured it was worth a shot so I pulled it out and saw a layer of gunk around the magnetic piece and inside the hole it sat. After cleaning that section, the pump was put back together and IT WORKED! My pets were eager to use the fountain again now that it was working. For the health of your pets and the pump, PLEASE take it apart and clean it thoroughly. You can reference the Drinkwell 360 replacement pump image here on Chewy to see all the pieces that can be removed. You may find the pump comes back to life! It may not be a solution that works for everyone, but it's definitely worth trying.
I would not recommend this fountain at all. It comes with 3 black plastic prongs to hold the middle part in place. One of mine broke a week into me having the fountain. There’s also no pressure pushing the water in the filter meant to remove dirt and hair, so there’s just dirty water sitting there if you don’t clean and replace it daily, which defeats the whole purpose of having the fountain. It’s also huge and a hassle to transport and clean. I will not buy this overly priced fountain again. Most other ones are much cheaper and do a much better job.
For the price, this is absolute garbage. I've owned multiple water fountains and decided to switch to a larger one for a multi-cat household. It's a pain to clean due to its size but I swear to god, this fountain gets dirty faster than a plastic fountain. Ultimately, the pump crapped out on me 4 months into owning the fountain which is laughable. I saw the other reviews with the same situation and figured they were one-offs but nope... apparently not.
We have 2 cats and they both drink out of the fountain. The sound of the water attracks them to the fountain. I love this fountain, I don't need to worry about the bowl being empty. A friend recommended this to me and I am so thankful.
I love this fountain. It is easy to clean using a nice new toothbrush and the small round brush made by the manufacturer. It holds a large quantity of water which is a great asset. I have had mine for almost 2 years and it is still like new. Stainless steel is better than plastic for preventing cat chin pimples. My cat loves it and no longer licks the sinks, the tub and the faucet aerators. I solved the problem of the black clips not holding the components together very well by using pieces of scotch tape to hold them on. A very easy solution and it works! This little thing should not prevent you from buying it! It is one of the best things I have for my cat.
Bought this in 2020. We have been very happy with it. 2 cats and one dog share this. I change the filter every 2 weeks. I clean it when I change the filter. The stainless steel cleans very well.
The clips don't fit and it's extremely aggravating to put this together because of that. And It needs to be cleaned every two or three days, so you basically have to wrestle with this cheap thing 3-4 times per week. I want to return it. Awful.
We got this fountain years ago. We found one of our cats was sensitive to plastic (had stress feline acne) and needed metal. Another is part outdoors and suffered from bladder issues. This fountain creates continuous stream of water similar to out in nature. If they don’t want stream, they can just drink from bowl. For them it’s easier to drink from stream BC the bowl is high, harder to lean over. Only problems is I wish it would give a ringing or something when water is low. I fill it up every few days but sometimes house is dryer or they drink more. It’ll make a quiet gurgling sound when water low. So that said we replace pump yearly from blowing it out. We replace the tube filters and foam pad every 6 weeks. Easy to take apart and hand wash. We use filtered gallon jugs so no calcium buildup.
