Standard pet doors just can't stand up to multiple-pet homes or pups that are constantly dashing in and out, but the PetSafe Freedom Aluminum Pet Door is anything but standard! The solid aluminum frame is intended for heavy use and features a soft flap with magnetic closure to allow easy access indoors and out. The included slide-in closing panel locks the pet door to restrict access or to add more weather-resistance when necessary.
Solid aluminum frame has reinforced corners for heavy use or for multiple pet homes
Closing panel is included for improved weather-resistance or to control your pet’s access to the pet door
Flexible, tinted, and adjustable soft flap with magnetic closure and pile weather stripping along the sides of the flap opening form a weather-resistant seal
The aluminum pet doors, in my opinion, WILL hold up with a multipet family. But, they are a little bigger than the all plastic PetSafe doors. I have a 110 lb British Lab. He can fit through a large Aluminum PetSafe door. So I am exchanging this for a large. Or, I am going to loose too much of my door during install. Otherwise, I would suggest putting the XL in the wall instead and trimming the inside of the wall after cutting and then mounting the XL door. BTW Chewy was extremely helpful in exchanging/returning the XL door! Kudos Chewy for excellent customer service!! And, over the phone at 6 a.m. on a Sunday!

The door is a good quality product and does install easily IF YOUR DOOR IS 1.25" or thicker. If your door is 1" or less, removing the extra metal all around the frame ON BOTH SIDES, destroys the frame and looks terrible. This door should be specifically for doors 1.25" or thicker!

So it is a nice dog door, but it was missing parts. I barely have it up for two months and it is falling apart.
X-Large Aluminum Door
on May 16, 2020
Just received and installed my Aluminum X-Large door. I wasted money buying the installation kit. I got 2 sizes of foam insulation to put on the door, but not enough to make a complete round of the door with no instructions on where it should be installed. In my opinion I wasted $15 on this kit. Door is of average quality. I wanted Aluminum, because this door faces the West and gets a lot of afternoon sun. I hope it makes 5 years.
Just what we needed.

Our dog's tend to rush out the doggy door when excited or see another dog out front. The large door we had prior to this door just seemed to small for them. The extra large door gives them plenty of room to get out without any problems.

Installed product in vinyl screen door on back porch. Modifying screen door was necessary. Finished installation exactly what we wanted. Pet door is high quality. Installer must use care to insure proper rough opening size and correct hole diameter for plastic thru-bolts. Do not over tighten bolts.

Waste of Money; Poorly Designed

I bought a total of 22 of these doors and we have been performing maintenance on them every since they were installed. Some arrived with bent frames, the vinyl flaps warp when the temp drops below freezing and will not straighten back out, and the screws keep falling out every day. I bought replacement flaps at almost $50 each, same result with the warping and cold air coming in. My power bill has more than doubled (more than 1,000 month). I replaced the screws, but they continue to fall out and the aluminum strip does not hold up well (it bends easily and will not hold the flaps in place). I called PetSafe customer service and they offered to sell me 22 replacement hardware kits at $10.95 eachI bought a total of 22 of these doors and we have been performing maintenance on them every since they were installed. They explained that the dog's back can hit the top of the flap and this is what is causing the screws to fall out. It is an XL doggy door; it should not fall apart this easily from one dog using it over the course of a week or two. They also explained that cold weather can cause issues with the flaps warping and cracking. If they know this, they should address and correct the issue. These doors and the replacement parts are too expensive and the repairs are too time consuming for a product this expensive. Poor product and the customer service is no better.… more
Working good so far

This was pretty easy to install and has been working well so far.

Purchased this door in Oct., 2019; my son installed on my existing door-he did a great job! He followed the instructions and it went together well. It took an hour -two hours for completion.
It only took a short training period of maybe 30 minutes and both my son's dog and mine began using it like it was a new toy to them! It works great, the magnetic strip does hold it shut well; we did have one strong windy day and it wouldn't stay shut, but that's to be expected. It definitely was worth the purchase for freedom of use for my dog.
