Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

My cat developed pretty dramatic diabetes-- very lethargic, loss feeling in his back legs, walking flat on his hocks, not able to jump very well etc-- so my vet recommended switching him to a wet food ASAP, but since he'd never had wet food and he was a very picky eater, she also prescribed him this DM kibble to eat in the meantime while I could slowly introduce a decent low-carb wet food because she wanted him 100% off the Blue Buffalo I was feeding him immediately. I only took a couple days to transition him completely over and he took to it pretty much right away! Since then I've also switched him over to a (nearly) 100% wet diet, and over the past year has fully recovered in remission and regained all his strength, energy and healthy weight. However he still can't get enough of this stuff and begs for it every night after his wet dinner, so I still let him have maybe 1/8th cup of it in his treat ball for dessert. It also makes a good topper; sometimes if he's being stubborn about finishing his wet food I'll grind up some of the DM pieces and sprinkle it on top, then he eats all of it right away. So I can't speak to how much it helps diabetes by itself since I put him on wet food as soon as I could, but he definitely LOVES it and that's honestly half the battle when your cat is sick AND a picky eater.
My mothers cat was very fat and diagnosed with diabetes. He was unable to walk and dragged his hind legs around. He could not get in or out of his litter box. It was so sad. I asked the vet for this prescription food after reading the reviews on Chewy. This dry food is the best! He has been eating it now and loves it, for about 6 months. He has lost approx. 8 lbs, which he needed to loose and is now walking. His hind legs are still weak but the improvement is remarkable. I highly recommend you try this food if your cat has diabetes:-)
Taco loved this food and it settled well in his stomach but it kept his glucose levels too high. I had to get rid of it within two weeks of opening the bag. The carb level is still too high compared to what is recommended for feline diabetes and is too expensive to try it and hope for the best.
My one cat was diagnosed with diabetes & the Vet recommended Purina Pro Plan DM. The other cat who is not diabetic loves this dry food. I have two happy cats who are working on a healthy diet thanks to Purina Pro Plan DM.
My newly diabetic cat is thoroughly enjoying her new food. I gradually introduced it to her with her old food and she is doing better! Chewy was the least expensive option for this particular prescription food and I'm so glad it only took 1 day to ship! (We are a county or two away from the distribution warehouse, yay!
Midnight the cat is post diabetic and has to stay on a special diet. That includes DM Dietetic Management wet and dry foods. Thankfully she especially loves the dry food. She has been on it for nearly 6 months now and does not grow tired of it. I am so pleased because she tends to get bored with food and you have to find something different. But this has worked out very well, which makes it a little easier to absorb the cost.
After he didn’t like the Hills brand I was not sure about this brand and I’m happy to say that he likes it!! This saves me from having to buy two different foods for him.
Did not realize how low I was on my cat’s RX food. My cat likes this a lot and do not want to change. Ordered last minute and got in 2 days and all was well. Thank you!
Two cats needed to lose weight for health reasons. My vet recommended this food. The cats are eating both canned and kibble and losing weight.
My vet was out of my cat's dietetic maintenance food. I ordered it from Chewy and received it the day after the vet's approval! All of my orders are received the next day from Chewy! It is so much easier getting my dog and cat supplies from Chewy! Needless to say, I love Chewy!
