Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Ditto actually eats it!
By DittosMom on Jan 18, 2021
My little 16 year old calico is in the beginning of kidney failure, she has to be syringe fed the wet food, but she actually eats this dry food on her own. It's worth the price to have her gain her weight back, actually eat well, feel better, start to play again, keep her with me for another couple of years. I'm not well off, the price is a hardship, but Ditto is my fur kid, and worth it. I also use Epakitin, Fortiflora, and give her subcutaneous fluids to flush the things the kidneys have a hard time handling. But she actually eats this food and enjoys it, what a blessing!

Great Product and Service
By Bennet on Feb 9, 2021
We tried Hill’s kidney diet first and my girl absolutely refused to eat that so we switched to this. We were already feeding her Purina before we got her diagnosed so we hoped for better luck with this - and we got it!

Helps my older cat
By Chrissy on Aug 11, 2020
My 17 year old cat had been throwing up frequently and it was not hairballs and she was already on a premium, high quality food that she had been on for years. My local cat clinic vet gave me a sample of this food with the disclaimer that it's plain and many cats don't like it, but my cat ate it right up! She started putting weight back on and I have my happy, purring kitty back. She was so miserable with her tummy issues. Even better to get this on sale. I had it on my autoship, but the sale price prompted me to order early.

If your cat previously liked Purina they may like this
By Dinah on Jul 7, 2020
I've been struggling to find a prescription hard food for my cat with Kidney disease that my cat will actually eat. She used to eat their Vibrant Maturity hard food, so I figured if it's the same company she may like this too. That seems to have worked out (for the most part). She doesn't turn her nose up to this like the other prescription hard food we tried. She doesn't scarf it down now as much as when we first got it, but that may more be due to her having lost a tooth (and possibly her losing appetite slowly due to Kidney disease). If your cat liked Purina before, they may enjoy this, but every cat is different.

Love Purina but my cat isn’t a fan of this
By Minka on Jun 30, 2020
We love Purina products and my cat has always eaten Purina foods. She is a Fancy Feast fan and we use both Fancy Feast dry and wet food normally (pre-diagnosis). Unfortunately, this is a dry food she will barely touch. I have to mix in a bit of her old dry food to get her to eat it, which is less than ideal. The bag also came to us with a small tear at the bottom, and for the price I was disappointed to see that the packaging got holes that easily. We will be seeking other kidney diet dry foods that suit her preferences.
