About Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Health For Cats

Acute or chronic? If your Veterinarian thinks your pet has a gastrointestinal issue, they may classify it as acute or chronic. Acute conditions appear suddenly and deteriorate rapidly. Chronic conditions develop over time and may worsen gradually.

Worried About Your Cat’s Digestion?

Your cat’s gastrointestinal (GI) system helps support the rest of the body by properly digesting food and making sure to extract the nutrients needed for overall health. Your veterinarian is the expert on your cat, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best gastrointestinal health solutions and management options for your pet.

Know Your Cat’s GI System

  1. Mouth: where ingestion of hair and formation of hairballs can occur, due to frequent grooming.
  2. Stomach: the first part of the GI tract, where inflamation may lead to vomitting.
  3. Small Intestine and Pancreas: where the small intestine is responsible for absorption of nutrients within the diet and the pancreas aids in digestion.
  4. Large Colon (Tranverse): which is responsible for forming stool.
  5. Large Colon (Descending): which is responsible for forming stool; any alteration to this process may lead to constipation or diarrhea.
  6. Rectum: where stool leaves the body

Is this food okay for other cats to eat? I have another cat and want to make sure it’s okay for her to eat this food.

Answer by ChewyAug 08, 2018
Since this is a prescription food formulated to meet specific diet restrictions from known health issues, this food should not be fed to any other animal than the one prescribed due to the restriction of specific nutrients. Prescription diets can be detrimental to an otherwise healthy pet if that pet doesn't have the ailment for which the food is designed.

Is this for urinary also?

Answer by ChewyJun 20, 2019
This food is formulated to help cats manage common gastrointestinal sensitivities.

Good for pancreatitis?

Answer by ChewyJan 24, 2018
The food is formulated to support a cat's digestive health concerns or food sensitivities. We advise consulting with the veterinarian to determine the best option for your cat.

The formula has changed. My megacolon cat once relied on this food to save his life. Now, it's almost unalived him. I wondered why this food escaped t-riffs from CN but only went up $3. The ingredients are deadly for megacolon cats. The "fiber" part has been replaced with HYDROPHOBIC or NON water soluble fibers, which compact into hard rocks in the large colon, and WILL NOT UPTAKE WATER, MINERAL OIL, LUBE OR SOAPY WATER enemas to soften the constipated poop in the cats colon. He needs multiple bags of SubQ fluids to loosen up the extremely hard rocks in his colon, multiple doses of Miralax and pumpkin powder just to help manually extract empty 7" of thick, palpable hard rocks in his intestines. This never used to happen before 2024. But, now, the formula has changed, after 11 years of using it.....and my cat paid a steep health price after 2.5 months of figuring it out, and I'm out almost $1000 trying to figure it out......that it was the formula that has changed. Not him. Not his amputated leg causing him pain. Not his supplements. Not the canned food. Not not drinking enough water. It's this food. I've eliminated everything else over the last few months. So, I've switched him to a food with water soluble fiber and he's evacuated smaller softer stools ever since, no medical intervention needed. I will NEVER buy this food again. It's dangerous to megacolon cats, expensive to owners, and extremely painful constipation is not something I want my baby to go thru.

My vet put my senior FIV+ rescue cat on this diet when we first got him in an attempt to get him to gain weight (he was 5.5lbs when we took him in). He was having a LOT of diarrhea and wasn't gaining any weight so he was incredibly frail. This food did help with the diarrhea once his body adjusted to it, but I don't think it helped with his weight at all. We went through one bag before the vet took him off of it because it didn't seem to be helping his weight. It did seem to resolve his diarrhea which was good, but long-term I don't think it would have been the right fit for him.

I’d say after 2 days of feeding, she was immediately using the bathroom normally. My 6 year old cat, who i adopted from a shelter last year, only will eat dry food. I’ve tried every single type of wet food, and broth. She refuses to eat it and will only eat dry. She’s had severe constipation. Going maybe 2x a week, and having to drag her butt across my floor in order to get out the tiny little rock hard nuggets. She was always in pain and uncomfortable due to the constipation. This food has been a god send. I 100% recommend it to anyone’s cat who has chronic constipation. She goes everyday now, long solid slippery logs lol

My cat (son) had to have his stool manually evacuated under anesthesia 2x in one week, as well as constipation flares often requiring several enemas. A dr I work with told me we must change his food (which was another prescription high quality food) this has transformed his stool from dry powdery rocks every 3 days to a nice soft yet formed stool that is more regular. Even trying adding Metamucil fiber to his old food for a month didn’t do the trick. This has saved his life.

Due to chronic constipation that may be genetic, Olivia was prescribed RC fiber response. She only liked Dr. Elsey's clean protein dry food, so I was worried she wouldn't eat this. She actually prefers it now and even though I still have to add fiber to her wet food, it's only occasionally. Thankful the her vet as well as the emergency vet recommended it!

Our cat who was injured as a small kitten by falling from garage rafters, had tail and pelvis nerve damage. This resulted in partial incontinence of both urine and feces. This food has helped a lot in reducing the number, smell, messiness of stool bits deposited in places other than the litter box.
