When pairing with this dry food, Can I substitute water for the Urinary SO wet food?

Does the Royal Canin Urinary SO make dogs pee more than usual?

Answer by ChewyJun 16, 2023
It is normal for the pet to urinate more frequently when on Urinary SO. Think of the urinary bladder as a funnel to which you are adding powdered lemonade and water. In this example, the lemonade powder would be the solutes present in the body and the water would be the urine. By increasing the level of sodium consumed in the diet, the goal is to make the pet thirsty so that they drink more water. In doing so, we are increasing urine volume (the water). The more water you add to your lemonade mixture, the less lemonade powder (solute content) there is in the bladder to build into crystals. Consequently, the increased volume of urine will stimulate the pet to urinate more frequently. This “flushes” the urinary bladder of the solutes and crystals that may have formed.

My veterinarian recommended putting our dog on this food when she was diagnosed with a UTI and urinary crystals. Our dog has never enjoyed a food this much. She used to sometimes look forward to her meal times, but often let her food sit around before eating. She is now whining for her meals before it’s time and she eats immediately. We haven’t had her retested for crystals yet so I don’t know how this may have affected that, but I plan on keeping her on this food because she enjoys it so much.

Years ago my Vet found crystals in our younger dog's urine. We were told crystals usually turn to kidney stones in time. They suggested a Urinary SO dog food. The office gave us a few small bags of different types to try. My dogs both choose Royal Canon. About 7 years later, at their last check up, no crystals and certainly no stones!

My boxer mix almost died we found him on a highway a couple of years back and we had no medical history on him or anything fast forward about a year and a half into US owning him he started not being able to go to the bathroom and was just getting very very sick took him into the Vet they said that they thought it was a UTI they didn't see anything on the ultrasound I have kidney stone disease so I produce them and he look like to me he was having a blockage they did exploratory surgery and they removed over 100 bladder stones and then he had some Stones stuck in his his uterus of his kidney saved his life and I was so grateful cuz he was in kidney failure and he has been put on this prescription dog food and it has so far worked wonders for him and he drinks a little more water eating his food we were having a problem getting him to drink we do believe that he suffered a UTI prior to us getting him and that's what caused all this but we're keeping him on the prescription diet we would rather have him alive than not and it's done amazing for him so far we have no complaints whatsoever

Our girl had urinary infections for a few months that we just could not shake. Working with our veterinarian we got it under control and started using the Royal Canin Urinary SO and we have been doing well for the last two to three months. Just an FYI, she does need to be walked or let out more often.
