What is Elura?
Elura is the first ghrelin receptor agonist to be approved for use in cats providing a novel mechanism of action to address weight loss in cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The flavored, oral solution is safe to use daily and approved for long-term use to help cats with CKD gain and maintain weight.
How does Elura work?
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) leads to ongoing, progressive weight loss. In most cats, weight loss has already started by the time of diagnosis and accelerates as the disease progresses. Elura works by mimicking the naturally occurring hormone, ghrelin. Weight gain from Elura is thought to be due to a combination of increased food intake and metabolic changes.
Can Elura be mixed with food?
Elura should be administered directly into your cat's mouth. Food should be offered 30 minutes after dosing. Mixing Elura with food has not been evaluated. If the cat will not allow oral dosing, discuss with their veterinarianon how to administer.
Does Elura have to be given on an empty stomach?
If the cat is routinely fed meals, Elura should be offered on an empty stomach. Food should be offered 30 minutes after administering the dose.
How long can my cat use Elura?
Chronic kidney disease leads to ongoing, progressive weight loss, and therefore Elura is intended for long-term use and should be dosed daily. Talk to your veterinarian about including Elura in your cat's overall CKD treatment plan to gain and maintain weight.
Is Elura safe to use every day?
Yes! Elura is safe to use daily to help your cat with CKD gain and maintain weight.
Can I give Elura with other medications?
Talk to your veterinarian if you have any questions about your cat's medications. There are no specific drug interactions known with Elura, but every patient is unique and your veterinarian can advise you on what is best for your cat.
Can Elura be given to a cat with food allergies?
There is no contraindication to using Elura in cats with food allergies, however you should talk to your veterinarian if you are concerned about your cat being able to tolerate Elura.
How long will a bottle of Elura last?
Once the bottle is opened, Elura is good for 90 days. A 15ml bottle of Elura will last a 10-pound cat (4.5kg) dosed daily at label dose (2mg/kg) approximately 33 days. It will last a 5-pound cat approximately 68 days dosed daily at label dose (2mg/kg).

Increases appetite
Helps my 17 year old cat who has hyperthyroidism eat more. I know he’s nearing the end but I want to keep him as comfortable as possible. He absolutely hates the taste but it’s easy to squirt down his throat with the dropper. He’s definitely eating better.
meh...maybe it'll work for your cat
I give this only one star because it does not seem to stimulate my cat's appetite - but who knows, maybe it is just my cat! This is the second attempt at such a product with my cat. The first was a topical that was applied to his ear; this is of course a liquid administered orally - in neither instance did it increase my cat's appetite... so it's just sitting on my countertop not being used now.
Stimulates drooling that's about it
Haven't seen a change in my cat's appetite. If anything, it's a turn off since she starts drooling the elura and goes hide for hours. Would not recommend at all!
Works for both cats
I have two 15 y/o CKD cats. They didn't like the taste, so I put 0.1ml in an empty gel capsule & use a pill popper. They start eating about 20-30 minutes after giving the meds, but it doesn't last long. After a week, I'll weigh them to see how it went. If necessary, I'll give a second daily dose or use a larger capsule for a higher dose. Side effects are a little bit of vocalization in one cat & a perhaps a little lethargy in the other.
This works
Our elderly cat with mild IBD also developed CRF and his liver values went wonky. Even with x3 weekly fluids he began losing appetite and weight. One week on this and he is eating like a champ and pooping like a German Shepard. While his activity is still low and he sleeps most of the day — he will be 20 in March — he is happy and his quality of life is excellent.
Works well
My 16 year old feline had not been eating or drinking as she should. Her weight was steadily declining. I had become very worried about her as she was somewhat dehydrated also. Her vet recommended that I try giving her .4 ml of Elura daily. I'm so glad I decided to try it. She is doing so much better now and has gained a pound back already. Her coat and overall appearance is much better as well.
Appetite stimulant
Keiko, our 16-year-old Seal Point Rescue, was diagnosed with chronic renal disease. She required fluid. Her reaction to Cerenia tablets was scary. Bringing her to the vet for Cerenia injections and fluid became very stressful for her. Doing them at home was stressful for me. Our vet agreed to try this new product, Elura. She said that dogs did well with Entyce. Her dosage was 0.4 ml which produced a bit of foam and salivation. Not as bad as the Cerenia, but enough to change the dosage to 0.2 ml twice a day instead of the 0.4 once a day. The 0.2 ml dosage works well. No foam. Keiko is eating, drinking normally, walking around, sleeping in her bed (not hiding), and hasn't required fluid or Cerenia injections. Great for her age and ESRD. Elura has a strong vanilla scent. It comes with a syringe you snap into the bottle, measure the dosage, and squirt into the cat's mouth. Very easy. The expense is less than vet visits for fluid and injections. Overall, it's a great product that could be considered for older cats with ESRD. My only problem was buying it. Our veterinary didn't carry it yet and we couldn't find one that did. I ended up with Chewy. Even then, it took a week to arrive.
