FAQ

What is Lactated Ringers Electrolyte Replacement Fluid?

Lactated Ringers is an injectable liquid that contains sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes. It is used in situations where rehydration is necessary. Examples of this include shock, decreased oral intake of fluid and food, illness such as kidney disease, and other problems. This solution can be given at home as necessary and your veterinarian can teach you the proper administration technique.

How is this medication given?

Lactated Ringers is an injectable liquid that can be given under the skin (subcutaneously) or in the vein (intravenously) as prescribed by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will determine the proper amount of fluid and route administration that is best for your pet so always follow his/her instructions. If you have trouble giving this medication or if you do not understand the directions, contact your veterinarian. If you forget to give a dose, try to give it as soon as you remember but do not give two doses at once. Your veterinarian may instruct you and teach you how to give Lactated Ringers at home. Your veterinarian can answer any questions you may have regarding the use of Lactated Ringers. This medication should only be given to the pet for which it was prescribed. Needles and drip sets are also available only when prescribed by a veterinarian.

How does this medication work?

It works to restore electrolytes (sodium, chloride, potassium, etc.) in situations where there is a loss of fluid. Lactated Ringers rehydrates the body and helps to maintain proper hydration. Hydration is necessary for normal body function. Electrolyte balance is important for certain actions including muscle contraction and nerve activity.

    Packaging needs improvement

By Mike on Oct 17, 2020

Not a good choice if your doing multiple needle insertions to draw fluid off. I draw 80ml at the time, and they leak badly towards the end of the bag. I have to sit them upright for storage after the first puncture. Finally, bits of plastic break of and plug the needle or end up in the syringe. For single use, they are probably OK. Will not be buying this brand again.

Good product, it is too bad I can't use it

    By P233 on Oct 27, 2020

So many issues with Chewy Pharmacy- Lactated Ringers has 2 parts (liquid and tube) then there is the needles (making 3). I was only sent the liquid, it's un-usable without the tube. They weren't willing to correct. Other vendors send liquid and tube together because that is how it comes (I have ordered elsewhere so many times, but I thought I'd give them a chance, order a lot of retail). But LR should be ordered elsewhere if possible, I will be next time.

    Product fine, customer service terrible

By ChewyFan on Sep 19, 2020

Product was fine, though one bag had a hanging loop that was stretched out and that made it hard to get an accurate measure of how much was being given each day. HOWEVER it seems the Rx side of Chewy cares a lot less about customer service than the “regular” side. I have three times tried to use them for prescriptions and all three were met with delays and false promises as they repeatedly dropped the ball. Even supervisors. I asked for management call backs - also nothing. This isn’t about the need to get an Rx, which obviously takes more time than food, but people blatantly failing to follow through on promises and then their refusal to expedite shipping to make up for their mistakes. Not really the headache you need when dealing with a sick pet. Other places have the same prices so with this level of service Chewy no longer has an advantage for me. … more

    It’s a Lifesaver

By Yennilynn on Sep 28, 2020

I was unsure whether to buy these because they weren’t the Vetivex brand I was given at the vet and I wasn’t sure how to use them, so I had to look up several YouTube videos, but all you had to do was re-use the old line and insert into the white cap. It seems to working for my kitty and she’s getting better (less jaundice in her ears); she has hepatic lipidosis. We give her 100 mL every day and so far it’s been successful in her recovery.

    Great product

By Jesse on Aug 30, 2020

Great packaging. Each packaging is double sealed which makes me feel great because I feel like it's a safe product for my pet. Always comes on quickly and we really appreciate the prices and easy ordering process. Customer service is usually great and quick. For the six months that I have ordered this product from Chewy, I have never been disappointed in the product or delivery.

    Bag leaks after inserting IV

By Jake on Aug 23, 2020

About a third of the time, the bag leaks after inserting the IV. I have never had the problem with a brand of ringer bag that is ~ $1.50 more expensive. Wasted too many bags to continue purchasing this brand, although I find the measurement markers more accurate on this bag. Markers do no good when the fluid drips out and is wasted.

Marked better and runs faster than standard bags

By CyNyC on Aug 13, 2020

I am very specific about the kind of fluid bag I want to use because giving fluids to a cat isn't super fun so I need the process to be efficient. I have found that there is a difference among the various types. One thing I also like is that it is the middle markers instead of just the whole numbers. This bag flows well and pretty fast.

    Excellent!

By Misskittymom on Sep 17, 2020

My 16 year old cat needs subcutaneous fluids as part of her treatment for renal disease. This is an excellent product, as a matter of fact it is the exact same product that's used in my veterinary hospital. Shipment was fast, even though my vet needed to be contacted.
