What is Lactated Ringers Electrolyte Replacement Fluid?

Lactated Ringers is an injectable liquid that contains sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes. It is used in situations where rehydration is necessary. Examples of this include shock, decreased oral intake of fluid and food, illness such as kidney disease, and other problems. This solution can be given at home as necessary and your veterinarian can teach you the proper administration technique.

How is this medication given?

Lactated Ringers is an injectable liquid that can be given under the skin (subcutaneously) or in the vein (intravenously) as prescribed by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will determine the proper amount of fluid and route administration that is best for your pet so always follow his/her instructions. If you have trouble giving this medication or if you do not understand the directions, contact your veterinarian. If you forget to give a dose, try to give it as soon as you remember but do not give two doses at once. Your veterinarian may instruct you and teach you how to give Lactated Ringers at home. Your veterinarian can answer any questions you may have regarding the use of Lactated Ringers. This medication should only be given to the pet for which it was prescribed. Needles and drip sets are also available only when prescribed by a veterinarian.

How does this medication work?

It works to restore electrolytes (sodium, chloride, potassium, etc.) in situations where there is a loss of fluid. Lactated Ringers rehydrates the body and helps to maintain proper hydration. Hydration is necessary for normal body function. Electrolyte balance is important for certain actions including muscle contraction and nerve activity.

    Excellent price

By Susan on Mar 29, 2021

My vet prescribed sub Q fluids for my cat. The price at the vet's office was high enough that I was grief filled, but considering euthanasia. The price through Chewy made it possible for me to face the idea of doing the sub Q fluids for the rest of my kitty's life.

    Does the job

By Michelle on Jan 13, 2021

Lactated Ringers is lactated ringers, right? The difference is in Chewy's customer service and FAST delivery. I ordered 3 bags from Chewy. I mailed them the prescription. Within a week I had the order, even with the time for mailing the prescription. On the same day, I placed an order through the online program that my vet actually participates with. They approved the Rx over the phone the next day. FIVE days after I got the order from Chewy, the other order shows up. Talk about frustrating...Chewy it is from now on!!

    Needed product arrived vandalized

By Dogwhisperer on Feb 12, 2021

I needed these IVs and ordered a case (12). The box arrived opened and not resealed, just closed and missing one ringer. The cost is double the cost at Costco

Good product, it is too bad I can't use it

    By P233 on Oct 27, 2020

So many issues with Chewy Pharmacy- Lactated Ringers has 2 parts (liquid and tube) then there is the needles (making 3). I was only sent the liquid, it's un-usable without the tube. They weren't willing to correct. Other vendors send liquid and tube together because that is how it comes (I have ordered elsewhere so many times, but I thought I'd give them a chance, order a lot of retail). But LR should be ordered elsewhere if possible, I will be next time.
