Feeding Instructions

The amount of food your cat requires will depend on activity level, age, and environment. Feed at room temperature and refrigerate unused portion. Always provide access to clean, fresh water.

For adult cats, feed about 2 cans per 7 lb of body weight.

Transition Instructions

It is always a good idea to start out slowly on a new diet with any pet. Slowly increase the amount of new food being added to the present diet over a period of 5-7 days. If any digestive upset or loose stool occurs, make the transition more gradual. It is a good idea to allow your pet's digestive system to calm down and return to normal before proceeding. There is no need to rush this transition. Once your pet is accustomed to Nature's Variety foods, you can rotate freely between forms and flavors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are your products made?

All Nature's Variety foods and treats are manufactured in the United States.

Where do your meat and poultry come from?

Nature's Variety is committed to using high quality, safe ingredients from government-inspected facilities. Our natural ingredients are continuously inspected for quality and tested for analytical compliance before being accepted at our facilities.

Why do I occasionally notice a slight change in the color of your diets?

Nature's Variety does not include any artificial colors or dyes in our wholesome foods. As a result, the color of our food is totally dependent upon the color of our healthy ingredients, and may vary from time to time. Absolutely consistent and uniform color does not come from nature.

Why do I occasionally notice a difference in the moisture content of your Instinct cans?

Our Instinct canned diets are predominantly meat and are all natural (with added vitamins and minerals). As a result, our canned diets will directly reflect the amount of natural moisture that is in a variety of meat or poultry. For example, lamb is a drier meat – so our lamb formulas often have less noticeable moisture than our rabbit formulas (as rabbit meat has higher levels of natural moisture). Please be assured that the natural moisture present in our canned diets will never exceed the percentage that is guaranteed on the label.

What is the shelf life for your products?

Instinct, Prairie, and Homestyle cans – 2 years (unopened).

How are your foods preserved?

Nature's Variety uses only natural preservatives for our wholesome foods. For our canned diets, the manufacturing (or retort) process sterilizes the food and removes all air, thus there is no need for additional preservatives.

How do I store your kibble and canned diets?

We recommend storing our canned foods in a cool place, protected from extreme heat or cold. Once a can has been opened, refrigerate the unused portion until it can be fed (up to a day or so).

Transition Instructions

Always introduce a new food over a period of 5 to 7 days, mixing increasing amounts of Pride by Instinct with the current food each day.

Visit the Instinct Pet Food website for more specific feeding recommendations and information on how to easily combine different forms of food.

  • My boys love this food

    By on

Considering one is a solidly "fat" cat it might not be a high bar, but they have turned their noses up to some foods but never this. I find it funny that the slim cat is so excited that he eats his portion and then "helps" the fat cat with his. The portions are the same size.

Please see my review for Daredevil's Duck by Instinct. Leo is my 5th Siamese and I have decided to give him only wet food. After trying many brands and flavors, Leo has settled on the Pride Rockstar's rabbit and Daredevil's Duck. They are grain free and natural with no by- products, meal, grain, etc. This is his go to food. Loves the flavor and texture. Look out Chewy get ready for many orders.

  • Good food, need more food...

    By on

My cats do love it and if your cat has allergies to chicken and gluten this may be for you (I think), however the one draw back is that there aren't a lot of calories per can so you do have to feed them more cans per day and these (so far) only come in 12-pks versus other brands that come in 24-pks. So it's an expense that you should weigh and be aware of.

  • 5 paws up for this one!

    By on

5 cats simply loved the luscious chunks of rabbit in gravy. They ate every bite! I recommend this food for anyone who can afford it as a dish you can rotate in with your other meal offerings. It will be greatly appreciated by your furry friends. Unfortunately for me, though, this food is too expensive to serve on a regular basis. But, having said that, rabbit is more costly in every brand, so it is not this brand, itself, that is more expensive. Great, healthy food!

  • My Cats will not eat it

    By on

I'm disappointed because after reading the reviews, I felt this was a good, healthy choice for my cats. Unfortunately, they won't eat it so I cannot provide any positive feedback here.

  • High quality, great food. Cats loved it!

    By on

My cats are picky eaters and I'm always nervous about buying food. There might be one cat that likes a food and two that hate it or just the opposite. Seldom do I find something that everyone loves. From the first can of Rockstar's Rabbit, my cats were begging for food each time I went to the kitchen and plates were cleaned. This made me feel good that they were eating something good quality and loving it.

  • Cats love it

    By on

I tried this because I have a cat with IBS that it is very hard to find food for. I bet 90% of the food I try causes him to have negative symptoms, but when I do find something that works for him, he sometimes gets bored with it and stops eating. This one has a a couple of ingredients I don't care for, but my cat can eat it without issues and one of my other cats (a dry food addict) has taken to eating it too, something I thought would never happen. So, I like this as a rotation from the regular diet I give my cats, they all love it, and I rarely have any "leftovers" wasted in the dishes.

  • Cat didn't like the rabbit or the venison - same brand

    By on

I tried both the Venison and Rabbit of this brand. My cat tried each once and wouldn't eat it again. Tried mixing it with another brand and he would pick through it. Gave a can of each to a friend, his cat wouldn't finish it on first serving. Ended up giving it away to the local shelter - they were happy but don't know if their cats will like it any better.

  • Rabbit is the most natural food for cats

    By on

Rabbit and hare are the main prey for lynx and other wild cats and loaded with taurine (an essential amino acid for cats). I have a Maine Coon and a Norwegian Forest Cat, and these breeds have physiologies a little closer to their wild ancestors than some breeds, so this is working out well for us. Their fur is softer and more abundant since we started feeding them rabbit. And they like the flavor!
