Is the rawhide in these small pieces that are put back together or a single piece? I'm concerned about the potential for intestinal blockage in the event that my dog might swallow a larger piece than he should.
Answer by AM33May 21, 2023
No rawhide is in them, they are veggie based. Easier to digest if it was swollen whole.

At least as thick as larger size.

Why do they make a smaller rawhide, yet insist on making it thicker than many pieces in the larger size? I have 2 lab/hound mixes - the 85 lb-er is a strong chewer and she can handle the larger pieces rather easily. The lighter chewer 75 lb-er started taking a day or more so I got the medium size. They obviously sell these by weight so they can fit in the bag (vs count), but I think miss the point. They should be shaved down in thickness more as well. When he (75-lb) carried 1 medium piece around for over a day, I gave it to her (85-lb) and she took longer than a larger piece took. They both LUV the product (so, 3 stars), but I wish it was more chewable for him for the teeth cleaning benefit.

Unbelievably effective.

My dog had a rapidly worsening issue with bad breath and tartar buildup. I tried Greenies and other dental chews. They were only soso effective. She would not tollerate toothbrushing; I tried several different toothpastes and gels. I tried food and water additives. I tried supplements. In complete disgust I had resigned myself to the fact I'd need to schedule her for an expensive and dangerous dental cleaning at the vet's office. So the last thing I tried were these. I'm so happy I did. I cannot recommend these enough. Quite simply they work better than anything I know of to clean away tartar and get to the root cause of bad breath. It is the first dental chew I've found that the dog actually has to gnaw. There is real cleaning power in all that gnawing. The dog absolutely loves them. She goes nuts when we start to get the bag out and reach for one. She starts doing all her tricks in rapid succession hoping that one of the tricks is the magic word to earn the treat. It is comical. I firmly stand by my 5 star review. I will continue with these forever. Having said that there are some things I don't love: 1) the size and thickness of these treats varies significantly from treat to treat and bag to bag. 2) The dog did get some loose stool the first week or two, but it resoved and has not been an issue since. I think it was just due to the change in diet. 3) It is rawhide or close enough to rawhide that it is a choking hazzard. I would not give these to any dog unless they are being actively supervised. Even with these drawbacks these are unbelievably effective! A note about the PRO-PLAN brand treats that are similar. We also tried those. This Virbac product is more consistent in size and more economical than the pro-plan version. Pro-plan version is also effective but I think they would be better suited to larger dogs (~60lbs and up.)

Sent to emergency room

After giving these to my corgi, he began to have vomit spells in the middle of the night. The second night was so aggressive and scary. He was practically chocking while throwing back up the dental chew in pieces. Our doctor diagnosed him with HGE. In the years we have had him he has thrown up but none were like this. We get him check regularly (more than twice a year) he has always been in good health. He has no foreign objects in his stomach. So after a couple $$$ later and X-rays, and bloodwork, it is strongly believed these treats could have triggered HGE as it was the only new product added to his diet. Going back to the Greenies.

My Dog Didn't Enjoy These

I bought a few bags of these chews on Chewy as they were cheaper here rather than purchasing them at the animal hospital. The animal hospital said these chews were supposed to be better for him and would be good for his dental health. I have tried to get him to eat them, but he does not like these chews.

Our Carl LOVES these!

Our vet recommended these. Both dogs love them. We typically avoided these types of chews because they smell HORRIBLE but these are great, no stinky smell and we can tell a difference in our dogs' teeth and breath after only a couple of weeks of these treats!

perfect chew

I have been using these virbac teeth chews for over 15 years. Recommend by my vet and I am a veterinarian nurse and I agree with my vet. I have 6 dogs, all get tarter buildup and still will chewing these but it is far less than previously owned pups I’ve had. No more dental cleanings at thousands a dog. I don’t and will not brush my dogs teeth. If you prefer a softer non - rawhide ; they make virbac chews in soft chews also and they work better. Read all info if the product before purchasing and you won’t be dissatisfied. Rawhide is fine for animals, pull up if you can before they can swallow it and vomit it up. These are perfect for my doggies teeth. No issues In 15 years.

Great but not what you think.....

I bought my first bag at my Vet's office. They said that although it looked like raw hide, it was not. That is not true. It has the same properties and safety issues that raw hide does. When I looked at the ingredients list it plainly says raw hide with enzymes to clean the teeth. So....yes it is a great product..... but it gets slippery and gummy and a dog can easily get choked on it just like raw hide.

Gave both my dogs diarrhea

I ordered these in the past and my dogs loved them. This time they both had liquid stools every time I gave it to them. Very disappointed in the QC failing to ensure the same standards as this is not a cheap product given all of the other options available. Probably won't buy them again given the results from this batch.

Great for Some Dogs

I have a small miniature poodle who builds plaque really fast even with me brushing his teeth daily and also using various gels. I tend to not like the compact starch "bones" that claim to clean teeth. These rawhide chews seem to be helping with my dog without causing digestive problems. The reason he does not get digestive problems is because he does not consume these. He enjoys gnawing them and I enjoy listening to the abrasive scraping as he gnaws. As the strip softens along the edges he either loses interest and/or I take it from him and save for later or toss. In this way, he gets the chewing/scrubbing and pleasure benefit without the nasty effects of rawhide in the GI tract. I can only recommend these for little dogs who chew without swallowing too much. I love the fact that these don't put excess carbs into his diet and don't feed plaque forming bacteria in his mouth.

Best chews ever

This is *the* product that saved my days with a teething puppy, and they were recommended by my vet. With a pup that's like a hoover, especially during his bad teething spells, these C.E.T. chews are lifesavers. Being fully digestible, they're also one of the few chew products I'd tried that don't affect his tummy. Highly recommended!
