How many patties are in a 8 ounce bag??
Answer by ChewySep 04, 2019
Although this product is packaged based on weight, there are approximately 14-15 mini patties per bag.

How many patties do you feed one cat a day???
Answer by ChewyNov 09, 2017
The weight of your cat determines the serving size (per patty) that should be given. Cats 1 1/2 - 2 pounds should be given 1/4 patty, 3 - 5 pounds should be given 1/2 patty, 6 – 7 pounds should be given 1 patty, 8 – 11 pounds should be given 1 1/4 patties and cats 12 pounds should be given 2 patties. The above feeding guide is based on feeding 2% of body weight. Growing kittens and pregnant or nursing cats may require as much as 3-4% of body weight fed daily during early growth and high bio-performance requirement periods.

Do the Rabbit patties rehydrate any better than the Nibs do?
Answer by ChewyFeb 07, 2018

Winner, winner, rabbit dinner

Millie needed to go on a novel protein diet for chronic ear infections and see if she could get some relief by avoiding common allergens. Millie is also diabetic, asthmatic and hypertensive. I puchased some rabbit cat food, limited ingredient style, and she was underwhelmed by it. I purchased this and ended up sprinkling it on top of the "lid" food so she will eat it. She loves this stuff and I also bought the treats from this same brand. These squares of freeze dried food are soft so they are not difficult to crumble up. Millie really likes this rabbit formula and it is helping her stick to her restricted diet.

The Gourmet and Gourmand both loved it, but ...

... after reading reviews on Chewy, I decided to break up the last bit of a bag and inspect for plastic and/or paper and/or (?). Maybe what I found is just dehydrated rabbit bits. The questionable bits were many small, slender, slightly curved, flexible pieces of (?) that reminded me of fish bones. Unfortunately, I didn't have the presence of mind to take any pictures. Vital Essentials Rabbit Dinner Patties is good quality cat food from everything I've read via reputable sources, and my two loved it. Finding something both will eat and that the one with IBD can keep down is a major accomplishment. Hopefully what I removed is part of the rabbit and I was just being overcautious. I'll update my review when or if I get any new information.

knowingly deceptive

My one kitty ( out of 2) has LOVED every freeze dried patty over the years. I do grind it first then place into warm water. However - yes, there does seem to be more shards of bone recently. Most soften with the warm water, although a few do not - so I stir and examine it before putting it down. My biggest complaint however is their Calorie count stated on each bag. I would give Gracie the Vital Patty in the morning - then weigh out different varieties of wet canned food later in the day - not to exceed 200 calories. Gracie lost some weight- then it seemed harder and she even would go up a few ounces. This perplexed me until I started to weigh the Vital dry Patty’s - and found great inconsistency of weight. I contacted Vital and was told “each patty is 0.5 ounces”. Well no - it is NOT. I told them this, as well as sent photos of three different flavors sitting on a food scale. Not One is 0.5 ounces. The range has so far been 0.47 to 0.71ounces , with the same bag having even different weights within. They then changed their tune, in telling me there Would “always be inconsistencies due to protein, moisture and fat variances”. This really angered me - their being so deceptive - both on the package and in written communication. I suggested they state their calories in Ounces - not Patty’s. If your cat is on a diet - Weigh their food. If you break the patty to equal 0.5 ounce - that usually is not very much food.

This is not the same as the frozen raw.

I purchased this because the frozen raw patties are currently back ordered. I just assumed it would be similar since it's just freeze dried but the rabbit would be the same. My cats will not go near this. They inhale the frozen raw but will not touch this. Sigh*

good for tender tummy

One of my furbabies has a delicate digestion, and these rabbit patties seem to be just right for her tender tummy. She was a kibble addict, and I've tried so many different formulas to please her desire for dry food without the upset stomach experience. I simply break off a portion of the patty and crumble as a topper/side to her wet food. She gobbles it up, and no more vomiting or fussiness at the litter box. As another poster mentioned, I too found a few strange, pink strings in the patties (found 3 in one bag), and a bone fragment that I felt was too big/sharp for digestion. So I certainly recommend pet parents to inspect each portion before serving. Hence the rating for this product is minus 1 star for quality control. Otherwise a great product that I would highly recommend.

Finally Found A Winner

This review is for Rabbit only. I had tried multiple foods. She would eventually eat, but had no enthusiasm. My finicky cat now meows as soon as she smells this food and eats it all up. It’s made in the USA too!

my cat loves this

I’ve been purchasing the rabbit patties pretty regularly for over a year to feed to my kitty every once in a while to give her a break from/when I run out of homemade food. She absolutely loves this stuff and licks the plate so clean in no time (“plate so clean that I would eat from it… but I won’t really” - said my husband). It keeps well (on average we finish a bag in 3-4 months maybe?), smells good, is easy to serve (hydrates quickly… SO much better than the nibs)… what more is there to ask for? :)

Poor product control - plastic found in patty

My cats love vital essential products, specifically the rabbit and duck patties. But some of their products have such poor product control. Recently in the rabbit patties I’ve found blue plastic, and in the duck patties I’ve found red/pink paper. So please be extra careful when feeding your pets.

Good, but bone heavy

My IBD cat loves this food, and he actually begs for it! The patties crumble pretty easily and soften well with hot water. My only issue is that it's very bone heavy. Some bone is okay, but several pieces have been long, thin and very sharp which concerns me. Thankfully the bones are easy to throw out if you pick through the food after crumbling, but I'm thinking bones like that could potentially hurt a cat! Since he loves this food so much, and it's one of the few that doesn't cause him diarrhea, I will continue to feed it to him. I'm just super careful and diligent about removing any bone pieces like that. It would be 5 stars otherwise!

Not the same

My cats really liked the chicken formula until they changed the ingredients. The color is very dark for the chicken formula and they are out of stock often so I had to get a different one . We are trying the rabbit but they don’t care for it . I’m going to try a different brand .
