When changing bedding types or brands, it is best to mix old and new bedding, changing over the course of 7-10 days.
I purchased this the first time and it was absolutely wonderful, so I added this to my auto ship... however the SECOND time I received a completely different product in the same packaging. I am genuinely confused. The first product I received was great and normal wood SHAVINGS with the blue bedding, the second was wood CHIPS not even close to the same kind of cut... and barely any blue bedding. I will be removing this now. Don’t buy it. My rabbit is not comfortable with this crap.
I have been trying every kind of bedding for my guinea pigs, and this is, so far, the worst one. The biggest issue at my house is that these shavings wind up everywhere. We have a 2 story condo for the piggies and we already covered the lower part of the sides with plexiglass to try to keep the bedding in the cage...and with other bedding we were doing okay, but I put this in and it is literally ALL OVER my house. Every time the pigs come to the wire doors to say hello there is a fresh pile of shavings on the floor, which then my dogs step in. And then they bring to the farthest corners of my house. Poor Roomba can't begin to keep up with the mess and we resorted to bringing in the shop-vac to clean it all up, because even the Dyson doesn't stand a chance. I have never had a bigger mess.
To be honest, I bought this by mistake which is why I am giving it 2 stars instead of 1. I never buy wood shavings as animal bedding because I noticed that rabbits tend to eat it and some types of wood are harmful for them. I had thought that it was just the paper bedding I usually get, but it wasn't. I didn't want it to go to waste so I used it anyway and I found my bun eating it. When my rabbits hop in and out of it the shavings fly everywhere. We have blue pee pads and the wood gets caught in the cotton of the pad and makes it seem dirty. I would not recommend this product if you think your furry friend would eat it.
can’t smell anything, lasts for a week. i would definitely buy this again for my guinea pig! it’s not hard nor soft, my guinea didn’t seem to mind it as she laid on it wen she has other things to lay on.
I'm fostering a Flemish Giant rabbit and he pees A LOT. I mean really a lot. They sent him home with me with a couple days worth of supplies, and the smell was really strong even with daily litter box changes when using the paper based bedding. I used to use wood chips when I had hamsters 30+ years ago and thought that would be worth a try, and got this since it has both the fluffy paper he's already used to and the wood chips. I expected it to help the pee smell, but it exceeded my expectations. All I smell in the room he's in now is hay. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Unneutered male rabbit pee is very strong to say the least.
I picked this as an alternative to the substrate I typically buy. It has a fresh smell, he (the pig) likes it and it seems to last longer (freshness wise) than the previous product I used. I have also used it with my baby chicks and it has done well. I highly recommend this product.
The picture shows that it looks like the paper product, but when I got it, it was the yellow wood shavings. If you click thru the pictures it shows two different pictures one with he paper and one with the yellow wood shavings, wish I had know before I ordered it because I wanted one that was paper shavings not wood shaving. The shavings make a huge mess in my cage.
I didn't mean to buy shavings... a pet store lectured me when we bought our guinea pig that shavings cause pneumonia and shamed me against ever thinking about buying them... well I didn't realize that's what these actually were. They have that pine shavings smell when you 1st open them but I have to say it's been 5 days now and I still can't smell the cage. We used them on all our rodent pets when I was growing up and I don't remember them ever getting pneumonia. I prefer the other non-pine bedding but these aren't too bad.
This bedding is unsafe for any pet to use it have wood chip shaving.Think of walking on splinters all day it is not safe for any pet to have I recommend get the care fresh soft stuff bedding what ever its called nothing with wood chip or shaving in it.
At first I was using natural paper bedding but the smell was strong within 48 hrs. I switched to shavings plus and it has made a big difference. Now I only change his litter pan daily but the bedding I do once a week. I use disposable pee pads underneath, I just roll pads with shavings and toss. Easy peasy, smells pretty. :-)
