6 Expert-Proven Ways To Keep Squirrels Out of Your Bird Feeder

Squirrels are opportunistic foragers that’ll eat just about anything. Bird seed blends are often high in fats and oils, which these critters find irresistible (especially if natural food sources are scarce). Squirrels are clever, acrobatic, and persistent, but you can outsmart them.  

A properly designed baffle is one of the most reliable steps you can take when figuring out how to deter squirrels.  

“Think of it as an umbrella or cone barrier that physically blocks a squirrel from climbing up to the feeder,” says Hannah Hindley, a naturalist and co-author of “In the Shadow of the Bridge: Birds of the Bay Area.”“Smooth metal works best since squirrels can’t get traction.”

It’s a simple tweak to your backdoor setup, but hanging your bird feeder on a pole is a true game changer.  

“Poles give you more control over placement and make it easier to use baffles effectively,” notes Dick Evans, a wildlife and culture photographer who co-authored “Birds of the Bay Area.” “A freestanding pole set at least 10 feet from trees, fences, or rooftops prevents squirrels from leaping directly onto the feeder.”  

Speaking of which, where you place your bird feeder matters. This is something to factor in not only when attracting birds, but also when considering how to deter squirrels.  

Hanging feeders from tree limbs practically invites acrobatic raids, Evans says. All feeders should be placed at least 10 feet from limbs, shrubs, or house edges—basically anything a squirrel can leap from.  

“Keep feeders away from compost piles, pet food dishes, and dense shrubs where squirrels and other mammals might hide,” Evans says. “Position them in open areas with good visibility so birds feel safe but squirrels have fewer launching points.”

“If you use a tray, choose one with a steep edge or install it above a pole baffle to make it harder for squirrels to reach,” Hindley advises.

“Birds do not have the taste receptors that pick up the spice from peppers the way mammals do,” Hemen says. “There are many brands of birdseed that are infused with hot pepper, but some get better reviews than others.”  

He does add that there are some concerns about the powder some of these seeds may produce. The worry is that they can irritate birds’ eyes, especially if you go the DIY route. Before dropping money on pricey gadgets or spending time on elaborate setups, it’s worth knowing what doesn’t work to keep squirrels out of bird feeders.  

Experts have undergone rigorous trial-and-error scenarios to figure out what just doesn’t work to repel squirrels.  

“Many of us have tried hanging feeders from trees or greasing poles—neither method works for long,” Hindley says. “Squirrels can jump 6 to 8 feet horizontally and climb nearly anything.”  

“Even ‘no-squirrel’ mixes that rely on cheap filler seeds like millet tend to backfire; squirrels will still dig through for what they like, and the leftover seeds can attract other unwanted visitors such as cowbirds or rodents.”
