FAQ

What Causes Cat Litter Odor?

You don’t have a stinky cat, you have a stinky litter box. And while no animal has pleasant smelling waste, cat litter odor can be extra powerful. There are a variety of factors that make cat litter odor so strong. Cat urine is very concentrated, containing pheromones and hormones used to mark their territory. In addition, as cat urine breaks down, it releases an ammonia odor and mercaptans (the same smell produced by our smelly friend the skunk).

What’s The Best Way To Control Litter Odor?

Controlling or eliminating litter odor is an issue that every cat owner has to tackle. The first step is to make sure your cat is properly trained and has access to a litter box with fresh litter in it. Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. The second step is maintaining the box by removing used litter regularly. Scoop clumps into a Litter Genie® pail to help lock litter and odor away.

What's The Best Way To Eliminate Litter Odors?

Rule number one is always keep a clean litter box. Having a Litter Genie® pail next to your litter box is a great way to ensure that you have a place to lock away your used litter to keep your home fresh and your cat happy.

How Many Litter Boxes Should I Have?

Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. That will make sure your cat always has a place to go!

My Cat Missed The Litter Box, What Do I Do?

If it’s a one time issue, treat the affected area with water, vinegar and mild soap and blot dry. If it’s a repeated issue, consider moving your litter box, retraining your cat, or visiting the vet to make sure it’s not a medical issue.

How Deep Should My Litter Be?

Most cats prefer two inches of litter or less. Too deep, and your cat may not like their footing and opt to go to the bathroom elsewhere.

it's a very handy little trashcan! It stops smell pretty well, and holds a lot. It's easy to use and compact too. My only real complaint is that it doesn't click together in the middle very sturdily - which means you have to be careful about how you pick it up or it'll fall open. But typically I have a bag in there so it's no big deal, just a little annoying. Otherwise it's great! Much more acceptable for company seeing it than ye olde poop bucket.

  • Should have got it sooner

We've had indoor cats for 20+ years. We've had 4 kids and used a Diaper Genie for all of them. And yet I only just discovered the Litter Genie last month. And now feel like an idiot we didn't have one sooner! Has made litter cleaning SO much easier. We have 4 cats & 5 litter boxes. We have 2 boxes in the basement with 1 litter genie, 2 boxes on the main floor with 1 litter genie and a self cleaning litter box on the 2nd floor. Each litter genie can hold a week of cleaning 2 boxes so it works well with garbage day. It holds the smell in well and is easy to use. Been using it for a month and have not had to replace a cartridge yet but I imagine soon. But, seriously, if litter cleaning is We've had indoor cats for 20+ years. • Quality isn't what it used to be

    By on

This is my 2nd Litter Genie. I love the concept. My first one wore down after years of use and the lid was broken. I bought a second one. This one is cheaper quality than the original. The plastic button that connects the top half with the bottom doesn't click into place. I'm disappointed. When I try to move the genie, the bottom half falls against the floor. Very annoying.

  • Flimsy design - litter locker was much better

    By on

This genie is a cheap knock-off of the early-day litter locker. When you try to lift it by the handle that is supposed to allow you to pick the genie up to move it, the top part just flies open, allowing the plastic "poop string" to just drop out of the bottom part. The button that is supposed to lock the top and bottom part together is too shallow to keep them together, even when the genie is entirely empty, so it does not happen due to excessive weight. I am disappointed in this design, as it takes away from the functionality. As the top and bottom part are clearly not "sealed" or held together, the odor is not as sealed in as it should be either. Would not recommend. My 10-yr old litter locker This genie is a cheap knock-off of the early-day litter locker. • Game Changer

    By on

Don't ask me how I have had cats for so long without a Litter Genie, I REALLY don't know. But this is a great product. Reduces the smell and makes scooping more convenient. This is great ESPECIALLY because I live in a county where plastic bags (that i've used for their waste) are taxed so I had to use doggie poop bags. Dog poop bags are not made to hold litter waste. The litter genie is the way to go. Also, the refills are pretty inexpensive and easy to find at local pet stores or big box stores if you unexpectedly run out because you didn't add them to your Chewy autoship...

  • Litter Genie

I am completely in love with my new litter Genie! It’s clean, compact, and there is no smell at all! I have two cats so I change it once a week and that’s just about perfect. Easy to use I only wish I had found this sooner. Great product.

  • A blast of fresh air it's not...

    By on

Does not contain the odor back as advertised. Advertised to hold back odors up to 7 days between changes, it does not. We have one kitten, after just two days of use, each time you open the Genie to make a deposit you get a very unfriendly burst of the last two days deposits! It works well if you empty it out in a 24 hr period, otherwise the odor builds up inside the Genie.

  • My Litter Genie experience

    By on

It was a little awkward for me to figure out, but it works great!I had trouble figuring out the picture directions so I had a friend help me. It does keep the odor out o0f the house and I'll be anxious to try emptying it when full.

  • Had two weeks, but hard to tell we have a cat in here.

    By on

My daughter has wanted a cat for the past year and, as luck would have it, my aunt needed to get rid of hers. The Litter Genie was a little weird to put together (probably just me not being able to understand fully) but once assembled, it has been great. Our laundry room (and where her little box is) did not smell at all for the 2 weeks we used it until I cut it off and switched out the bag. Super easy. I actually just threw the tied off bag into the trash can to take out the next morning and didn't notice any odors (more than normal trash). I actually recommended it to another friend that is looking at getting a cat.

  • An Amazing Solution

    By on

This thing is amazing! When I was first setting it up, I was worried as the unit is not exactly "air tight", but after a month or so of using this I have not once smelled any litter after it is contained in here! This is so easy to use, just open the lid, dump the litter into the top, pull the black lever and let it drop into the bag below, and once the black lever is in place, the smelly litter is contained in the plastic bag and there is no smell! I love that I'm using less plastic bags. All of my friends recommended this product to me, and I understand why!
