You don’t have a stinky cat, you have a stinky litter box. And while no animal has pleasant smelling waste, cat litter odor can be extra powerful. There are a variety of factors that make cat litter odor so strong. Cat urine is very concentrated, containing pheromones and hormones used to mark their territory. In addition, as cat urine breaks down, it releases an ammonia odor and mercaptans (the same smell produced by our smelly friend the skunk).
Controlling or eliminating litter odor is an issue that every cat owner has to tackle. The first step is to make sure your cat is properly trained and has access to a litter box with fresh litter in it. Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. The second step is maintaining the box by removing used litter regularly. Scoop clumps into a Litter Genie® pail to help lock litter and odor away.
Rule number one is always keep a clean litter box. Having a Litter Genie® pail next to your litter box is a great way to ensure that you have a place to lock away your used litter to keep your home fresh and your cat happy.

If it’s a one time issue, treat the affected area with water, vinegar and mild soap and blot dry. If it’s a repeated issue, consider moving your litter box, retraining your cat, or visiting the vet to make sure it’s not a medical issue.

Most cats prefer two inches of litter or less. Too deep, and your cat may not like their footing and opt to go to the bathroom elsewhere.

They heightened the XL via an additional piece instead of it being a solid body below the trap door. The additional piece has multiple tabs all around which plenty of air can go through. I had noticed this at time of purchase but didn't think much of it (I thought there would be an internal sealing system) until I went to clean it for the first time (because it stunk inside despite using the bags jt came with), when water gushed out of the 8+ tab holes. As others have mentioned, it doesn't seem durable because the trap door is also what keeps the whole thing closed. I wish I had gotten the Litter Genie Plus instead which seems to have a better sealing design.
After reading the reviews on a lot of these cat products, I decided to buy this version. Glad that I did. You control how much waste you store at a time by the size of the bag you create by its length & knot at the bottom. Found it was no big deal to tie it. It was a good buy for me. The only thing I have a little trouble with is the pullout disposal shelf that seals the top. It takes at least one hand to keep it slid open, there is not an "open lock catch" to keep it open. It wants to snap shut when you are scooping. Would buy it again. Just need to figure out how to keep it open. Seals well to keep the odor inside!
We have 2 cats and 2 dogs. After trying an automatic system and not finding it satisfactory, we settled on a standard litter box in an attractive cabinet, Pretty Litter brand, and the Litter Genie XL. As long as it is scooped every day the litter box and Genie only need to be emptied once a month! It comes with a scoop that fits into the Genie opening perfectly. Our puppy is still working on her house breaking, so I use the genie for her solid waste when she has an accident. There is never any odor! (except when the cats first go-I have particularly stinky cats) Just hold your nose and scoop it into the Genie! No more stink! And I happen to have an extremely sensitive sense of smell! The whole arrangement is less expensive and less labor intensive than the automatic no scoop system we first tried.
If I hadn't of bought a regular one I probably wouldn't know exactly how bad the XL was. Nothing stays closed. It's very difficult to move around. When you pull the lever to put the litter in the bag everything opens up and it makes it very difficult to use. When you go to move it the base opens up then. There's no handles to move it around. The opening where the litter goes is very small so you constantly have to pull the lever. Literally goes everywhere because the opening barely allow the scoop to go in. I got the XL because I have 2 cats. I really liked my old one. Not sure why they had to change everything around and hard to use.
I didn't ever bother with a diaper genie when my kids were babies, but the litter genie is amazing! It definitely helps with storing used litter and keeps the smell at bay. I use with clumping litter and a sifter pan. It is somewhat challenging to pour from the sifter pan, but I haven't spilled yet. I have to slide the litter genie away from the wall to get the correct angle of the sifter pan. The first few times I used it, there wasn't enough weight to pull the bag down, so pull the bag down a ways when you first begin using. We only got the kitties a couple weeks ago and I haven't had to empty it yet.
I started with the smaller version initially to try this out and was sceptible at first. Prior to this, I was just using grocery bags each time and tossing in the outside trash. Lord knows we all have tons of those! Anyway...I love the idea of this item. I have multiple cats inside (3-4; one is in/out) and even with 2 litter boxes, the main box has to be cleaned out twice a day. That's a lot of grocery bags! Having something that I can 'deposit' into for several days and twice a day without looking like a bag'o'poo is AMAZING! I have just recently upgraded to the big daddy of the Genie, I cant imagine this NOT in my life! It basically doubles the amount that you can place in the closed container. I now have 1 XL and 2 regular size with 1 of those as backup! If you have multiple cats using a litter box, I highly recommend the XL version. My only wish, is that the Bag Dispenser inserts had more in them. Especially on the Genie XL.
I love my litter genies and I just moved into a new house with my mom and a total of 5 cats. I have multiple litter boxes and multiple genies. I got this XL one for the busiest box BUT what I have found is 1) this doesn't work exactly like the smaller versions and can be a bit fiddly with the lid and the slide 2) these are big - which means it holds a lot of litter. About 20lbs if you fill the bag. So, consider if you are carrying it downstairs, how you dispose of it in a larger garbage can. Can you carry that? My recommendation is to get the large one.
Yes, it does contain the bad odors. However, the XL is full after 4 days of use. I was hoping to go at least a week without emptying. Pros: Odor is contained, Litter scoop is very sturdy, easy to use Cons: Not big enough for multiple cats, there is no handle which makes it difficult to move around especially when full, not sure if I trust the bag strength to carry from my basement to the garage-I noticed the dog versions of this have a handle. If you have 1 cat then this if probably okay. Not good for multiple cats
Litter genie will always take the cake for waste storage. These newer, taller ones are so much easier to take apart and thoroughly clean which I greatly appreciate. I have 2 in the house and they keep the waste smell away.
The Genie is OK. The thing the Genie really has going for it over my long-time Litter Locker is that it is much friendlier to the environment in terms of how much plastic it uses. I sometimes have to pull the lever out a couple times, and that top piece is dusty with the litter I've put in over the week - so it doesn't seem as clean. But it controls smells and lessens the use of plastic, so overall, I'm satisfied.
