You don’t have a stinky cat, you have a stinky litter box. And while no animal has pleasant smelling waste, cat litter odor can be extra powerful. There are a variety of factors that make cat litter odor so strong. Cat urine is very concentrated, containing pheromones and hormones used to mark their territory. In addition, as cat urine breaks down, it releases an ammonia odor and mercaptans (the same smell produced by our smelly friend the skunk).
Controlling or eliminating litter odor is an issue that every cat owner has to tackle. The first step is to make sure your cat is properly trained and has access to a litter box with fresh litter in it. Most experts recommend having one more litter box than you do cats, so two boxes for one cat, three boxes for two cats and so on. The second step is maintaining the box by removing used litter regularly. Scoop clumps into a Litter Genie® pail to help lock litter and odor away.
Rule number one is always keep a clean litter box. Having a Litter Genie® pail next to your litter box is a great way to ensure that you have a place to lock away your used litter to keep your home fresh and your cat happy.

If it’s a one time issue, treat the affected area with water, vinegar and mild soap and blot dry. If it’s a repeated issue, consider moving your litter box, retraining your cat, or visiting the vet to make sure it’s not a medical issue.

Most cats prefer two inches of litter or less. Too deep, and your cat may not like their footing and opt to go to the bathroom elsewhere.

I had the original, but now with 3 three kitties, I wanted something larger. The design of the XL is great in theory, but was poorly designed and I don't think they took into consideration the top heaviness of the unit when open during bag disposal, as the entire unit topples over from the weight of the top section hanging open. The litter scoop holder on the side always falls off; and the the entire top section of the unit pops open when picking up or carrying if you don't also support the bottom of the unit when picking it up. I bought 6 refills, and now that they're used up - this Litter Genie is going out with next week's garbage. I hate the stupid thing. I'll just put a small Simple Human lidded trash can beside the litter boxes and use a new bag each day I guess.
We used to have the “normal size” Litter Genie. With 3 cats, we upgraded to the XL and I regret it every single day. The lid constantly comes off. The spot to tear the bags isn’t sharp at all, so as you try to tear, the entire container moves, the lid comes off, the scooper falls off. It’s AWFUL. No joke, I end up swearing at this piece of garbage almost every use. Once it’s totally done I am switching back to the original Litter Genie.
This is the 4th litter genie I've purchased. Only one needed to be tossed cause it was on my patio for a few years and moisture effected the springs on the opening into the bag. Otherwise no issues, no smell and pretty simple to swap out liners. This larger unit seems a bit lighter to me, less sturdy than the smaller ones. But I have 2 cats and appreciate not having to change the liner as often so I'm keeping it! 3 litter boxes and 3 litter genies!
This thing is a lifesaver if you live in an apartment or have multiple cats. Zero smell gets thru somehow. The quality could be a little better as some of the plastic cracks on the sliding door.
I bought this once Litter Locker stopped making its old liners because it said it was updating its model and then became impossible to buy in the U.S. once my liners ran out. I bought Litter Genie because there was no other option that I see. Like many here, I do not like this item. The design is horrible. Getting the bag out of the top once full is way too difficult. I only bought the XL because the standard size is smaller than the standard Litter Locker, which filled up before a week was out. I thought the XL would be the way to go. After a few months, I became too frustrated with it and bought the regular size pail. I found that one did not lock out odor and that I had to touch the dirty plastic border-insert in order to change the liner. Gross! Plus in the week I used it before having to change it, I found it didn't seal tightly enough to keep out odor. I reluctantly went back to the XL. Today I went to change the bag and the top would - not - come - off. It finally popped off but broke into a number of pieces. It's unfixable. If I had another option I would gladly use it, but Litter Genie seems to have a lock on the market. If I didn't think getting Litter Locker replacement bags would be too difficult, I'd order one from Canada, where it seems to be available.
We use a litter genie by our house for disposal of poop bags. With an additional dog the XL size is just perfect until we make our trip to the dump. It blends in with the surroundings in the flower bed and seals so nothing gets in or out.
Unfortunately, this did not work out for me. I have a rather large cat and the size of the his pee-balls didn't fit into the large Genie apparatus. Also, the idea that you have to cut the continuous pull-out bag and knot it at the bottom was annoying. I really wanted to love this item, but at this point I wish I could return it and get my money back.
I bought the XL since I have 3 cats and the original was filling up way too fast. This is a GREAT size and the location of the top hinge is better on the XL (it's in the middle on the original and it often creates issues when emptying). This is a great solution for folks with multiple cats!
I have had the original litter genie for years and it worked great but I always wished it was a little larger so I purchased this one when I needed to replace it. The XL version is a terrible design. It does hold more, but the frustration of changing the bag just isn't worth it. The top is difficult to get off and it needs to open further down like the original. The bag ends up ripping while trying to pull it through the long, narrow opening and then the whole unit tips over while tying to get the new bag situated because it is top heavy when empty. It also isn't as sealed as the original. This one is headed to the garbage as soon as I order a replacement.
Very disappointed with this one the plastic seems a lot cheaper and the hall to drop the stuff into the bin is very cheap too . Yes the bin is bigger but besides that the cutter that cuts the bag inside is the wrong direction and is not sharp so I need to take a scissor to cut the bag loose.
