I have 1 canister and 2 turtles I clean my filter about every 3 months. I prep 4 gallons of water to add as water evaporate. Each gallon I add a some water then add: 1 tea spoon Reptisafe 1 tea spoon API Turtle Sludge Destoryer 6 drops Tetrafauna Agua Safe Reptile water conditioner Finish fill the jug and sit them aside and add as water level drop (every 2 to 3 days) I add 1 gallon. My water stay clear and doesn't smell. When you start to noticing a small odor change the Moss Ball. My turtles are 12 and 9 years old an my tank has about 25-30 gallon. DON'T OVER FEED this create a lot of dirt and sludge

Terrible product - would give zero stars if i could

I had this filter in less than 10 gallons of water and it did not keep the water clean. As another reviewer mentioned, there was a strange film on the top of the water and the tank started to smell bad after having the filter only a few days. This product does NOT work. I replaced it after 2 weeks and the new filter does a great job.

Doesn't Work Well As An Only Filter

I saw that this happened with someone else who wrote a review - My turtle's tank started getting a really gross white film at the top and the tank became stagnant and smelly after only 2-3 days (I had him for about 3 months prior and this was definitely a new problem with the change to this filter). I have one baby 2-1/2 inch painted turtle in a half-filled 29 gallon tank. The filter itself is not easy to clean and the pipes clog up with that nasty sludge. I had to buy a supplement Repto Filter because keeping this turtle tank clean became SO time consuming (even with the Python water changer). The tank just wouldn't cycle and would immediately get nasty. However without completely giving up, I saw that this happened with someone else who wrote a review - My turtle's tank started getting a really gross white film at the top and the tank became stagnant and smelly after only 2-3 days (I had him for about 3 months prior and this was definitely a new problem with the change to this filter). The tank just wouldn't cycle and would immediately get nasty. However without completely giving up, the white slime/sludge problem seems to be fixed with the addition of the inexpensive Repo filter because it helps circulate the water and provides the desperately needed extra filtration for owning a messy little turtle. If you already own this filter and are having issues, add a $8 (or something around that) Repto filter. If you are considering this filter, I wouldn't recommend it. … more

    Clean water-Finally!

    By on

Have 1 red-earred slider, 16 years old. Keeping water clean is always a challenge even with large filter. Purchased as 2nd filter, her water has never looked so good, I can see the bottom of the tank. Taking apart and putting back together sometimes a challenge if I can’t get a good grip and get everything back in just right but for the way the water looks, my arthritis will just have to live with it.

    Not impressed

I have yellow bellied sliders, and this filter can not keep up. It worked great the first week, and even after tediously cleaning the tank, the water still gets cloudy.
