Hemp Oil for Cats: Is It Right for Your Pet?

Hemp oil for cats generally refers to supplements derived, at least in part, from the Cannabis sativa plant, specifically from hemp varieties that contain very low levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound found in marijuana. This low THC content means hemp products won’t get your cat “high.”  

A big challenge for pet parents, however, is that “cat hemp oil” is not a single, clearly defined product. Hemp oil may be made from different parts of the plant that contain very different active ingredients. Manufacturers also often include other biologically active compounds in their products, further complicating the situation.  

When evaluating cat hemp oil products, look for:

Understanding the difference between all the products that may fall under the umbrella of hemp for cats can be difficult. 

• Full-spectrum hemp oil is extracted primarily from the plant’s flowers, leaves, and stalks (the so-called aerial plant parts). It contains cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD), terpenes, and flavonoids. All of these compounds are thought to work together in what’s called the “entourage effect,” potentially enhancing the oil’s benefits.

• Hemp seed oil is made from hemp seeds only, not the aerial plant parts. It is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids but contains little to no CBD or other cannabinoids. 
• CBD oil refers to products where cannabidiol (CBD) has been isolated and is the primary active compound. The main difference when comparing hemp oil with CBD oil for cats is that full-spectrum hemp oil contains a broader array of plant compounds, while CBD oil generally contains higher levels of CBD by itself. 

The generic term “hemp oil” could refer to products ranging from fatty acid supplements to full-spectrum hemp oils and extracts to CBD concentrates. Knowing what you’re giving to your cat is essential. 

It’s also important to note that hemp oil products produced for human or dog use should not be given to cats. They may contain ingredients, flavorings, or concentrations that are dangerous to cats.
