How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

About BLUE Buffalo
Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

Very good.
By Jules on Jan 7, 2021
After a lot of research, we switched to this food for our 3 year old CKD bulldog. We have tried several brands in the last 2 years. This has healthy ingredients, as well as the protein and phosphorous percentages I was looking for. We prefer wet food for hydration concerns, so we do add a cup of water to our dogs food 5 minutes prior to feeding. She loves it. This has also saved us $300.00 a month on her food bill; we used another popular prescription brand prior to this and it was breaking the bank.

Blue Buffalo KS vs my dogs-yuch
By favoritedogfoodphooey on Dec 7, 2020
I really wanted my dogs on this dog food but, man, they really hate it. I've added rice at my veterinarians suggestion (turns out no grains seem to cause heart failure!) and I've tried adding water to make a gravy. They will eat the rice and lick the gravy but only eat the food if they're super hungry. I'm so disappointed.

THIS IS THE ONE!
By MDMike on Nov 4, 2020
I tried a popular kidney brand that the vet recommended and my small shepherd's appetite was truly hit or miss. No enthusiasm. Mixed with some kidney-formula canned, didn't matter. Switched gradually to BB KS and mixed in some warmed (not hot) bone broth for dogs, and he laps up every bit, every night. So happy to watch him eat, and the extra liquid from the bone broth is good for the kidneys also without adding much protein or salt.

So far so good
By Dawghawgs on Oct 23, 2020
My 10 y/o lab recently had some blood work that came back a little off. After talking to her vet, we decided to put her on a kidney friendly diet to see if her numbers will improve. I reviewed the other kidney diet dog foods and chose Blue Buffalo ks because of the positive reviews on “taste” and that my pups have been eating Blue Buffalo for years and seem to really like it. So far so good, my lab seems to like the taste ( half KS and half chicken and brown rice formula) Her blood work will be rechecked in three months to see if the new food is helping. I will try an update then.

He Likes it!!!
By Apara on Nov 5, 2020
In August Max was put on a kidney diet food, which he hated. I wouldn't even touch it unless I hand feed him. Fast forward to October, I decided to buy this brand, and boom, it was a match. Hes back to begging for his meals and eating every kibble :)

Blue Kidney Support Diet
By Kate on Dec 20, 2020
My elderly dog, 16 1/2 years old is doing great on this food. His kidney numbers are staying within acceptable values. Tried other kidney support diets and they caused digestive problems. Will stay with Blue as long as Hemi sticks around.

Dog will not eat
By Princess on Oct 11, 2020
My dog mini schnauzer will not eat this food. Tried wetting it, soaking it, beef broth, chicken broth, mixing with wet can, nothing works. Way too hard for her to chew. I even soaked it for 2 hours and then tried to cut it up in smaller pieces, nope. The pieces are way too hard like trying to eat mini bricks. I have a full bag, not opened and it is very expensive. I will not purchase again, will try another brand for CKD.

Kidney Food for my Old Dog
By Momo on Sep 16, 2020
I have used Blue Buffalo products for my Labradoodle since he was a pup @13 years ago & have chosen their formula now that my dog has the beginnings of kidney disease. My vet recommended a different product but I chose BB since reviews of other products indicated the dogs did not like the taste. Knowing my dog is accustomed to BB and not a big eater did not want to try anything else as I have confidence in BB foods since my dog has always been very healthy & I attribute that to BB.
