1. Set Up
Insert a test strip into the meter. The meter will automatically turn on. Enter the appropriate CODE for the species being tested or on the strip vial.
NOTE: Use appropriate code recommended for each species in the table below.
Species | CODE for AlphaTRAK 2 Meter |
---|---|
CAT | See code identified on the vial. |
DOG | See code identified on the vial. |
2. Perform the Test
Please use standard sampling techniques for obtaining blood in all species. The AlphaTRAK Lancet may be used to obtain the correct size blood sample. Refer to the AlphaTRAK Blood Glucose Monitoring System User Guide or veterinarian/veterinary surgeon for blood sampling instructions.
When the prompt to apply the sample appears on the screen, lance the site chosen, and obtain a blood sample about the size of a pinhead (0.3 microlitres of blood).
Gently touch only one edge of the test strip to the blood sample.
The test strip may be filled from either side, but not both sides. When the strip is full, the meter will “beep” or you will see the moving lines on the display.
Do not press the edge of the strip against the test site. Do not put the sample on top of the sample target area.
3. Read Results
Results are displayed in an average of 15 seconds. The test time may vary depending on the blood glucose level. The results will be stored in the meter memory. Results are displayed as mg/dL (milligrams per decilitre) in the USA or in mmol/L (millimole per litre) or mg/dL outside the USA.
Store the test strip package in a dry place between 40° - 86°F.

AlphaTrak2
By Recommended on Mar 3, 2021
I have been using AlphaTRAK for years. For your first time you can get a pack that includes the meter, test strips and all needed to test your pets blood glucose. It is very dependable and accurate it was also recommended by my Veterinarian. I tried others but they either broke or I couldn’t find the stripes, etc. they also would error out and were more difficult to set up initially.

AlphaTRAK 2 test strips
By DiabeticKitty on Feb 21, 2021
I use these test strips because they can read a tiny amount of blood. But they are outrageously expensive. $50 for, at best, a 25-day supply. "At best" because there are always days when there's an error and you need to use an extra strip or two. I am indecisive as to which is better: AlphaTRAK for it's accuracy with small amounts of blood or ReliOn for its reasonably priced meter and strips.

Work great and fast shipping
By Sherribt on Feb 7, 2021
These work perfectly with my Alpha Trak. Make sure to code your monitor with the code for cat or dog that is on the label. Found this to be a very accurate way to test my cat’s blood glucose. Chewy also has speedy shipping which is always a plus!

Expensive but necessary
By Pucmom on Dec 7, 2020
The AlphaTrak system is one of few options for glucose monitoring which gives cat or dog specific reading. However it's really an expensive answer. It is possible to use a cheaper human monitor. The test strips for the alphaTRAK2 end up costing about a dollar a strip. If you have to wrestle with your pet to get the job done, as I sometimes do, a strip may become unusable in the tussle and now it's two dollars for a reading. Twice a day. Indefinitely. The makers of the freestyle blood glucose monitoring system make these: and human freestyle strips which look identical, fit in this monitor and are more reasonably priced. However you must enter the code off of the test strip vial to configure your glucometer to read appropriately for dog or cat, the number will change between lots - it's not always the same number and it's also not clear if the human ones actually are the same strips, so not worth the risk. One benefit of the alphatrak2 is that it allegedly can give a reading from a very small amount of blood. However I've found when the sample is very small the reading is not accurate. After hitting PubMed to try to get my head around the differences between pet and human glucometers and accuracy of pet point of care glucometers, I found a study stating the VetMate was equal in accuracy and better in some areas (Min-Hee Kang et al., 2015), it is a slightly cheaper option, if I were to do over I might consider this alternative. Although I would also mention my vet uses the AlphaTRAK2 in her office which is why I originally chose this option. … more

CAUTION about strips
By melstrails1950 on Jan 8, 2021
the vials for dogs /cats's codes can vary. WARNING. one vial might say code is 35/dogs and 37/cats. Then another vial might say code is 6 for dogs and 8 for cats and the meter needs to be manually changed. I never knew, instruction booklet just shows pics of 35/37 but in smaller print say may vary.

Competitive price. Quick shipment. Excellent communication. The shipping box was overkill; it was huge compared to the contents. Highly unlikely the product could be damaged during shipping.

Learning curve
By Elizabeth on Oct 29, 2020
As a new user & pet parent with a feline companion diagnosed with diabetes, AlphaTRAK couldn’t have made things easier. It is tricky at first, getting the exact amount of blood positioned correctly, but, with practice, this is relatively simple. ONE WORD OF CAUTION: With a NEW container, always check Code for dog or cat and reset your monitor accordingly. Don’t know why this changes, but it can save some test strips & frustration.

So easy to use
By Howie on Oct 28, 2020
Hi, I'm Howie, a 15 year old man kitty. Although I hate having my ear pricked for a test, these strips have been great for the past 3 years that my owner has been using them. Because my owner knows how to use them, it only takes one strip per test! So no extra pokes in my poor ears are necessary. Reading directions is very important, especially when administering tests to those like me, who cannot express our feelings in words. Please reconsider blaming the strip for your inability to take an accurate reading.

Infuriating
By CatDog on Oct 8, 2020
Right - I know I'm the only one but please be advised that these strips error out quite often once you've touched the ear and didn't get enough blood on the first try. Maybe your cat is like the ones on the videos that seem like they're in a trance, but my cat really doesn't appreciate getting his ear poked. (And don't get me started on the lancet plunger, which we've abandoned.) He's also not a bleeder, so it's a job getting enough blood for the test. But if you don't nail it the first time be prepared to have the test strip then error out on you, just when you're struggling to administer the test. I certainly don't recommend these, but the vet gave us the AlphaTRAK testing device so I don't think we have any choice about the strips. … more
