FAQ

How do I transition my pet to a new Solid Gold food?

Switching to any new dog food should be a gradual transition over 7 to 10 days. Replace 25% of the current food with Solid Gold pet food for 2 to 3 days, then feed a little more Solid Gold pet food over the next 5 to 7 days until they are eating a Solid Gold formula exclusively. This gradual transition will help reduce any digestive upsets that may occur due to the change in diet.

What is the shelf life of Solid Gold products?

Dry foods are stamped with a best use by date that is 15-18 months from the date of manufacture, depending on the food. Canned foods are stamped with a best use by date that is (3) years from the date of manufacture. Jerky Treats and Biscuits are stamped with a best use by date that is (18) months from the date of manufacture. Supplements are stamped with a best use by date that is (3) years from the date of manufacture.

Once a bag of Solid Gold dry food is opened, how quickly should it be used?

We recommend using the food within 6 to 8 weeks after opening.

What is the best way to store Solid Gold food once it is opened?

We recommend storing the food in the original bag, which should be stored in a cool dry place. Pouring the food into a separate container exposes it to a rush of air and can increase the rate at which it will oxidize, decreasing the shelf-life. By leaving the food in the bag, it becomes a barrier and provides an extra layer of protection. Canned foods should be covered and stored in the refrigerator for no longer than 3-4 days.

Can Solid Gold foods be frozen to extend the shelf life?

We have not conducted studies about how long freezing may extend the shelf life of Solid Gold foods. If a customer chooses to freeze, we recommend only defrosting a couple days’ worth of dry food to help prevent mold growth caused by excess moisture. An easy way to freeze canned food is in ice cube trays for simple serving sizes.

What is SeaMeal and why should I use it?

SeaMeal is a great supplement for overall good health. It is kelp based so it is high in trace vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. SeaMeal also contains flax meal, which is a great source of Omegas that are beneficial for skin and hair coat, as well as benefiting other organ systems. Additionally, it contains a small amount of a digestive enzyme, which helps the pet better digest and metabolize their food. We receive many reports from customers stating that this is a great product, and their pet’s look and feel so much better since adding this to their diets.

these save a trip to the veterinarian

By Catmom on Jun 6, 2019

I recently purchased these. My 3 year old male neutered cat (rocky) has had 2 urinary blockages (stones) in the past 8 months. The last one was 5 weeks ago. ( a nightmare condition, cat has to undergo extremely costly veterinary procedure and has to be on prescription cat food (which helps to prevent the formation of stones) for life. If the cat's urine PH level is too high (6.0-6.5 is ideal) uti's and stones are more likely to occur, however, 5 weeks ago my cat's was 8.0 and he could have died. Now with these strips I am able to check the urine ph without costly trip to the vet and trauma and stress to my cat. My cat is on prescription meds twice daily to help lower the ph. It's difficult to check a cat's urine level, however what has been working for me is if I see him go in his litter box, before he covers it, I immediately place the tip of the stick in it and it works. It has even worked if it is freshly covered and I do it right away. The color has gone from a 7.5 a few weeks ago to a 6.5 today, so the meds are working. If I see a drastic change, I will definitely call my veterinarian. So glad I found these on chewy.com! … more

    Chewy is a great partner

By Bonnie on Jun 14, 2019

Test strips came appropriately packaged and bubble wrapped. I was relieved to find them so I can save myself time and money by testing my dog's urine pH myself instead of waiting for a vet appt. She has had several bladder infections with painful bladder stones. Now I can test to see if an infection is building before it gets out of control. Thanks Chewy.

Healthy ph but still has crystals

    By MLS1 on Mar 31, 2019

My dog’s ph was showing as 6.5-7 on the strips, but my vet just did a urine analysis and found 2x struvite crystals present. Either the strips aren’t accurate or my dog simply develops crystals at this ph level. Either way, I’m writing this to let other owners know that a healthy ph doesn’t always guarantee a healthy urine analysis.

Easy to Use, Helpful to Monitor Potential Bladder Issues

By HeathieLiz on Oct 31, 2018

Although pH is only one component of a dog's health, it is worth keeping an eye on if your dog is prone to bladder infections, stones, etc. Early in my dog's recovery from bladder stones I would test every morning, now I check a little less frequently. Test your own pH, it's kind of fun! (Follow proper storage in order to preserve the strips).

    They are helpful

By MsShessy on Jan 23, 2019

Use at several points during the day, as the ph fluctuates. Try to get a morning sample before any food.

    Good product to have....

    By Molly15 on Nov 11, 2018

My 13 yr. old MinPin has severe spinal issues. Her UTI's have become quite frequent. These help her get to her doctor before the UTI's are really bad.

    Not a Reliable Product

By Bridget on Aug 24, 2018

These Ph strips continually indicated that my dog's urine Ph was 5.5. Went to the vet to have a urinalysis sent to the lab. The urine's Ph was actually 7.5. Pet owners who have dogs and/or cats with a history of urinary stones/UTI's depend on a product like this to be accurate. I have been worried that my dog was forming oxalate stones for no reason.

    Still not sure...

By Beckielou on Jun 30, 2018

Since I have a Great Dane that has had struggles with ph imbalance I have had to continually had to Pay $25 for every UA at our Vets office. I saw these and decided to give them a try. Honestly, I won’t KNOW they are really working until she has a “Bad” day and I Personally know that it should register in the Highest range on the Strips. I Truly hope it works, as the Last time I didn’t catch it early, her bill was $875! Will keep you posted! But, I seriously Love Chewy!
