Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.

About Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

About Food Sensitivities

Signs of Food Sensitivity

Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants

What About Enviromental Irritants

Like you, your dog can have sensitivities to certain things in the environment such as pollens, house dust or even fleas. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that contains optimal amounts of vitamins and nutrients which helps reinforce your dog's skin barrier.

Find the Right Royal Canin Diet for Your Dog

We have a broad-range of Dermatologic formulas for pets with food sensitives and skin issues. Talk to your veterinarian about the right formula for your pet.

  • Seeing changes in his coat

    By on

My Boxer/mix has environmental allergies. He gets yeast infections, constantly itching, biting and licking. He coat looked awful, very dull. After 2 weeks (that's why 4 starts) on this food, he coat looks better and he is more active. I am going to give it more time and hope the itching, licking and biting is reduced more. But, so far, pretty good. Chewy does have the best price, but I do wish it was a little cheaper or they offered discounts for senior citizens.

  • pretty good! My dogs love it

    By on

Previously my dogs were onRoyal Canin KO due to food allergy & skin issues. Now, the dog that has food allergy is no longer with us, but the one with skin issues is still with us. However, he doesn't like the taste of KO, so we decided to switch to this product. He seems to like it a lot.

  • My baby loves this food!

    By on

My miniature schmnauzer has been on five different types of food for skin allergies. She is very picky and won’t eat many foods. She loved this food from day one. It smells good. Her skin is good so far. I have tan carpet and have not noticed turmeric stains like others have complained about. My dog is gaining weight on this food, which she needed. Also, I love Chewy! They are so great to work with and they have been so understanding with my dogs food problems. I highly recommend this food. My baby loves it, her coat looks nice, and she is not itching!

This food was recommended by my vet as my dog is on steroids and that makes his skin dry and his coat dull. This does seem to have helped

  • Tried for first time

    By on

Have 9 year old Shih Tzu and tried this for her Seborrhea. While it is an autoimmune disorder, Lily's skin has really cleared up. I use a prescription shampoo and keep her clean and well groomed consistently. This food is the icing on the cake. Took her a bit to get used to it and it does smell fishy. Mix it with some wet and she is a happy girl. Chewy.com is AMAZING service. First time order and it showed up the next day which was a Saturday. Thanks so much.

  • RC Skin Support

Pros: Control over ingredients to help support skin health Cons: Contains a Yellow dye that will stain carpet/upholstery. If your dog occasionally throws up, you will have "yellow-spotted" carpet in no time. Clorox cleanup wouldn't touch the stain.

  • Royal canin skin support food

    By on

We had tremendous problems with our Boston Terrier, itching and hair loss. After spending about $2000 in going to vet dermatologists, 1 recommendation came back to use this product. We have now used it for 4 yrs and have NO problems. When we vary, inevitably my dog has problems again. It is a little more spendy but worth every penny.
