HART of Maine's Mission is to provide refuge, comfort, and medical attention to cats that have been surrendered, abandoned, injured, or abused – and to find permanent loving homes to adopt them.
HART is a mostly volunteer run organization that provides a safe refuge to hundreds of homeless cats each year. We rely on the support of individual donors to help us rescue and provide shelter for these innocent animals.
As a no-kill shelter with limited space, we must carefully balance how many cats we can accept while at the same time providing the best environment for the cats that are already in our care. We maintain an average population of about 110 cats at the shelter and have a number of cats who stay with us for months or years. We also rely on local foster homes to care for some of our cats - hundreds of kittens every year as well as a small number of senior and special needs adults.
