The mission of the Lawrence Humane Society is to nurture the human-animal bond by providing shelter, care and advocacy for homeless and abused animals, as well as resources for the people and pets in our community.
The Lawrence Humane Society (LHS) was established in 1951 to provide housing and care for homeless pets in Douglas County. Today, LHS serves over 4,000 animals annually, and we operate a newly-built full-scale animal shelter with a team of 35 staff members and over 500 volunteers. Our services include:

We do same day adoptions, provided the animal is ready and available. All dogs must leave with a leash and collar. All cats must leave with a collar and in a carrier. Handheld pets must leave in an appropriate cage/carrier.
