SPHR was founded in 2004 with the goal of rescuing purebred Persian & Himalayan cats from high kill shelters. Many people do not realize that Persians are the #1 breed turned into shelters in the U.S. Persians tend to do poorly in the shelter environment compared to other breeds, and often face euthanasia & aren't placed for adoption because they become so ill (their flat faces make them more susceptible to upper respiratory viruses). For those reasons, many public shelters seek to transfer Persians to rescues.
